Why publicly present a shortlist of 40 if only presenting 4 for the vote?
To present the illusion of choice.

Right, let's try this.
Thanks Matthew... even the Facebook-deprived can view that now. ;-)

Y'all bitching...
It's only your Facebook "security settings" I mentioned Matthew. Just saying.

(Not blatantly self-promoting, honest!)
Obviously. Those of us who choose not to use Facebook aren't even allowed to view your post. That's one way to ensure Hypnoflag avoids widespread acceptance.

New Zealand's climate ambassador, Jo Tyndall has teamed up with the Aussies. They reckon it would be too costly to make more of an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Of course both governments are conveniently ignoring the very real cost of doing nothing.

Do we have any idea what the panel of mates each got paid for their participation in this process?
The National Party said members would receive $640 per day and the chairperson would receive $850 per day, in keeping with the Cabinet Fees Framework.

Like many people I'd like my strong objection to this expensive and deeply flawed process to be registered. To be effective such a protest needs to be well-coordinated.
It looked like Winnie might take the lead in this issue but his "Keep our Flag" suggestion hasn't gained much traction yet. And it will ultimately be pointless to have one crowd voting for the least likely (contains traces of black) option, another faction registering their protest by defacing the form to be counted as "informal" and yet another group refusing to vote at all.
Because if we don't get our acts together, the coalition of the bland will sure as hell win this one by default.

Gregor Macaulay knows his flags. He's the editor of the NZ Heraldry Society's magazine and he designed the Otago flag in 2004. He dismisses all four of the proposed options as ''underwhelming'' and ''more complicated than is necessary''.
Dr Bryce Edwards is also quoted in the ODT story.
"The flags aren't likely to be terribly controversial ... but by the same token, they're not particularly exciting or groundbreaking,'' he said.
''They're more likely to be controversial because they're a bit bland.''
Dr Edwards said the blandness of the flags was a problem, because the flag referendum process was, by nature, a nationalistic one.
If no one was excited about it, it would fall flat, he said.
Is anyone at all excited by the four designs, apart from John Key and the flag design panel?

I reckon that one would get my vote Steven. ;-)
