Lately when reading Stuff I have to double-check that I haven't gone to The Onion by mistake.
Tonight the news that ECan's elected councillors have been sacked, and democracy will be reinstated in 2013...if we're lucky, and good.
Great piece, Emma, but I get this chilly feeling that satire is about to become redundant, because the truth is becoming totally hatstand.

I'm not loving being the only Ladyperson in this thread so far! Where is everybody?

Regarding Guardian columnists, like many people I've been dismayed at the lack of intellectual rigour in many of the items on feminist issues. Why is it that (mostly unpaid) feminist bloggers are at the cutting edge of debate, and columnists in the mass media are left pontificating about nothing in particular?

Helen Razer's rant is brilliant. Germaine Greer is also brilliant. Sometimes I disagree with her ideas, but unlike so many writers and thinkers, she is always original, and she always does in-depth research. The Female Eunuch has had a huge influence on our society and culture.
I remember also being blown away by Sex and Destiny, which many people found "difficult". Greer raises issues others are afraid to tackle, and we all benefit from the subsequent debate, whether it's out in the mass media or discreetly among friends.
Very much looking forward to Marlilyn Waring's contribution on Media 7, she always has fascinating things to say.

Was is Maya Angelou who said, "Wherever there is gold, there is a chain"?
Paper hat, anyone?

I keep expecting Brownlee to be embarrassed when his figures are shown to be wild guesswork, but he seems unembarrassable. Surely he expected to be challenged on the facts?
I have moments of wondering if the whole thing is a hoax.

Keith, you made me choke on my Milo, that is very funny!
If we converted all our dairy farms into P labs, we could buy China and pay America to deliver it while wearing a tutu.
ROTFL! Choke, choke.
All we need now is David Haywood to outline how the Reserve Bank can get involved.

I think the difficulty with a special-effects company making monumental sculpture is that it's such a different medium. An idea that might work in film is unlikely to work the same in bronze. This should be a no-brainer.

But you are saying if my other company buys a house (it's stock/plant/equipment), which has an oven in it, a water heater, light fittings etc, I can't claim any depreciation over the life of those items? it's owned by the business, it makes some money for the business (try renting without those), and if it breaks or gets too old, I _have_to_ replace it. But I can't depreciate it.
Maintenance costs on rental property are directly tax-deductible.

Great post, Philip. I'm so tired of people thinking that they will always be vigorous and able-bodied, and that anyone who isn't is nothing to do with them....
