Thanks Rosemary and Sacha. I can't find the full report - maybe it hasn't been publicly released yet. A friend of mine also has an adult with a large care package but says it is like chocolate. You might have the money for high quality chocolate but there are no specialty chocolate shops in the region where you live. So if you want chocolate you have no choice but to go with whatever is available. (Only she puts it more colourfully than that).
And then be told that you don't deserve good chocolate anyway as you are second class humans. -
Thanks for this. This documentary seems to have had a largely positive response on Facebook from people with autism and families.
Of course the other side is is Ashley Peacock's situation - 40 and (still) locked up for much of the last 15 years, with long periods in seclusion - and with parents worn out from advocacy for him but powerless.

This is a fascinating thread of great historical significance. Since August 2014 over 650,000 views and 2000 comments. I suspect it still has a way to go. I do hope it is being carefully archived.

We used to have a NZ Guidelines Group with a team of researchers highly skilled in analysing and grading scientific evidence. This whole saga shows why we need such an independent and skilled team in a public agency so the process cannot be captured by any interest group.

Best wishes with your research.

The Wellington City Council has recently decided to restore the Basin Reserve stand. That was the site of the temporary venue for the school while the Coromandel Street site was developed. I hope there is a plaque or something in the restored building to record this important little piece of Wellington's disability history.

Never been an incident when he is out of that place including to the hospital, beaches, cafes etc. Just needs good caring carers and some peace and quiet. Those injuries are not self-inflicted.

Hard News: Protecting privilege in Epsom, in reply to
Good question.

I went to watch Question Time in Parliament today. It's so nice and still slightly unreal to see Jacinda as PM and those three parties in Government working together. A question came up on this issue and among various exchanges Phil Twyford said 6 units would be specifically for disabled people. I don't know exactly what this means as I would hope universal design be incorporated into all new builds and therefore accessible to everyone - but 6 disability specific units still sounds good to me. Phil Twyford and David Seymour had a bit of an argument about it all with Phil's comments largely aligned with what Russell says on this post. But soon after David Seymour came over to the Government side and had a long intense chat with Phil Twyford (that didn't look like an extension of an argument) to the extent that Chris Hipkins who was next to them and trying to give a Budget speech all about education, asked them to shut up. I wonder whether they were trying to arrange a public meeting?

Hard News: Budget 2018: The broadcasting…, in reply to
It would be sensible to wait until the board under the new chair Jim Mather is up to speed. Hopefully there will also be some public broadcasting enthusiasts among new board appointees.
