Thanks for sharing the story of your experience, Helen. I'm so sorry you had to go through that ordeal.

TRIGGER WARNING
Talking to a friend earlier, who works at Police National Headquarters. Several staff in lunch-room. Conversation turns, as it does, to the scandal of the day. Old-school 50-something cop: "it's only rape because her boyfriend found out."
Fuck the police.

It’s not here-say, it’s hear-say. And it’s neither. So.. whatever.

I wish I could be a bit more excited about what Martyn Bradbury says on this but it’s difficult to see it as anything other than utter hypocrisy given what I’ve been told about his treatment of women who’ve been raped.

In any case, throwing more women at the police force in order to “civilise” it isn’t really effecting culture change, is it?
Hard to say yet
I’m not really sure what’s going on here (disingenuous facetiousness!?), and while I’m loathe to speak for Danielle, I rather think her point was that was that what’s needed to effect culture change in the police force is to “throw” significantly better culture at it.

I dunno, I might be alone in this but I kinda feel this thread of the convo is veering into sexist hogwash territory.
EDIT: I'm possibly just a little over-sensitive though, given the level of utter horror I am experiencing over all this.

What the fucking fuck!?

I agree. And we must somehow effect a comprehensive culture change.

[Argh premature]
If you told the kids I grew up with that their sexual relationship (e.g. he 12, she 16; or she 14 he 18) was legally rape, you'd get laughed at. Likewise if you told some teens (ftsoa >= 16) that they could voluntarily participate in group sex no worries, but if they got too drunk then they would then be being raped -- and the others that they would be rapists -- would they look anything but confused?Let's just say I can appreciate how we got here. How do we get out of it -- better sex and ethics education!?
