  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Not quite my electoral driver, simon.

Granted, Craig, but I didn't have you in mind as a "Ur Views" frother.

It's one thing for voters to complain about hidden agendas and treacherous sell-outs, but the names of the people behind the Section 59 compromise were mentioned somewhere in the news. Even those with fingers in ears might have heard Key defend it occasionally.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

I love democracy in all its finite glory, but when you read the "But I voted for John Key!!111" rants (Caleb's comment above) you have to wonder how somebody could walk into the polling booth in November and not know how the most famous and contentious law of the past three years got passed in the first place.

"When I voted National. I voted because I thought Key had guts".

No you didn't. You voted because you hated Helen Clark, and would have voted for a bag of decomposing toe nail clippings in order to get rid of her.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Random thought, on randomness of life:

Will two years and hundreds of thousands of signatures and over a million votes, achieve less than a lottery?

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Key says he will make an announcement on Boscawen's bill at 4 p.m.

Presumably he'll go for more consulty-wulty, maybe supporting it to a select committee or whatever it is with private members' bills.

For the first time ever, I find myself half-hoping National's polling numbers remain high. Somehow I think Key at 55% will have a lot more backbone than at 45%.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

    Just so y'all know.

A members' ballot was held today.

The Crimes (Reasonable Parental Control and Correction) Amendment Bill in the name of John Boscawen was drawn.

See my exclusive advance report on page 2 of this thread ;)

Very bad luck for Key. Perhaps it was the power of prayer.

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

    Carol - you're naive. ;)

But understandably so. Key's appeal is to our better natures, to the need to believe. As with all sales patter, we learn from bitter experience that we are purchasing the product, not the salesman. There's no refund on his smile.

"Sure, I'm relaxed about that, we can have a look at that, I've always said I'm ready to listen, we're working our way through that, look, I take that on board ..."

... means absolutely nothing. At all.

  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

If the Australians were reeling a little from the Bledisloe, then the Ashes defeat was a nice kick in the sack

In Australia, losing the Bledisloe is like losing your car keys, before finding them half an hour later. Losing the Ashes is when you realize your wife has run off with the keys, the car, the credit card and the mechanic.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Here's what will happen (brought to PA exclusively by Professor Sybil Trelawny):

At his press conference on Monday, John Key will present some new form of words, making no substantive change. This will not satisfy the vocal "No" team (Baldock, Kiwibloggers etc) but will impress the game commentators (Espiners, Armstrong, Garner) who will laud the Prime Minister's political skill. Goff will shrug and talk about Rodney Hide instead. Then it will all go away. The next opinion polls will show no change whatsoever.

Just as everything settles down and we're talking about the economy or the All Blacks, John Boscawen's private member's bill will be drawn from the ballot. The Prime Minister will be caught saying "fuck, fuck, fuck" in front of a live microphone.

And off we go again ...

  • Hard News: A voice of reason and authority,

If Gluckman doesn't now get interviewed on Close-Up, and generally feature in lead stories for several days, in news bulletins across all media, then we will have a definitive answer to those who ask why campaigners have to use actors and celebs to get the message across.

You want serious? You can't handle the serious.

Keisha should stop telling the Prime Minister what to do.

    That's Simon Barnett's job.
