  • Hard News: Geekstuff,

Damn. Transparently portable avatars are such a great idea. But they obviously need better resourcing than Tom currently has ...

If you read the latest thread in Tom's Blog the comments get progressively more snarky. It seems those who signed up immediately when 2.0 was released had their images cached correctly (see: RB), but those who were a few days later have started to queue up, hence no gravatars. We'll persevere a little longer I suppose, in the hopes that it will soon be fixed.

Yep, seems Tom at Gravatar is still having issues, regrettably. Try this URL for the registration part of his site, which appears to be working.

@Che: My best guess is that in order to get his system more responsive, Tom switched from generating gravatar images on the fly, to queuing, pre-rendering and caching them. And given he's just relaunched, the queue is possibly a little longer than is optimal. This should settle down over the next few days/weeks.

PS. matt, when does my gravatar start showing up?

Hmm, yeah, I can't really say. Theoretically, immediately; demonstrably, not. Russell's showed up today after uploading a day or two ago, but I changed mine over the weekend and it's still showing my old one. Tom at Gravatars seems to be having a few issues still, hopefully he'll get them resolved soon. Stay tuned.

  • Hard News: You can't moan,

I sat in on a Fixtures Committee meeting recently as part of a nightmare that is attempting to build in the inner city. Prior to the hearing I was there for, was that of a company in the viaduct seeking permission for a small neon sign to be erected above their entrance in one of those large office park buildings down there. A City Vision councillor (there were only two councillors present in total, which we're told was the quorum) raised the possibility of adding a clause to the resource consent stipulating that no signage (even A4 in size) be allowed to be placed in the windows of the company's premises, as a condition of granting the consent. In-house legal counsel gently informed the councillor that it was inappropriate to be adding conditions of this nature, but if it had been possible, I'm sure it would have been pushed through.

the skexies were like muppets, yes, but with leprosy. i can still remember 25 years later the collective "ohm" hummed by the mystics to alter the planet's vibration. awesome!

I think it's a cardinal sin to mix up The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, only one of those had Jennifer Connelly as the heroine...

  • Southerly: The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth,

How come you have a picture but the rest of us got a target practice cut out? Hmm?

Glad you asked. We meant to have this capability when we launched System in November, however it's powered by a site called Gravatar.com which ground to a halt under the strain of its own popularity about three days after the launch.

Gravatar has now been rebuilt and is happily serving avatar images once again. It's a simple concept: you sign up (for free) using your email address and then upload an image of your choice. Every forum site that supports Gravatars will then display your image based on the email address you register with (ie, you must register with the same email on each forum, or pay $10 for the privilege of having multiple addresses or multiple Gravatar images).

The site is just coming out of a semi-private beta, and will be fully open to everyone this weekend. For the impatient, you can sign up here today (although you may have to make a blog comment post on the Gravatar blog before it accepts your registration - but only during the beta period).
