  • Hard News: Phew, what a scorcher?,

I slept through the "Great Storm" of October 1987: although the south coast copped the strongest winds in 300 years

So did I and after watching this now infamous BBC weather report the previous evening who wouldn't have.

Michael Fish never quite regained his weatherman cred as a result of the level of death and devastation we all woke up to the next day.

    "Houses of Parliament" (HP) sauce

Despite smearing all manor of food with the stuff since I was a kid and the bottle having the initials and a silhouette picture of the palace of westminster on the label and being a private eye subscriber, it was only a couple of months back that it was pointed out to me the HP stood for Houses of Parliment. How thick is that! I pray that i'm not the only baffoon not to have spent the last 40 years missing the bleeding obvious.

I find the mini pretzels in the bulk buy bins at the supermarket are a reasonable substitute for a twiglet. Its nice to see that British Marmite is widely available though.

someone like Pita Sharples - who I genuinely respect, and has the charm of the devil - willing to do the media wash-and-spin on their behalf.

I dont think he had an option really. Clearing up the crap dumped by the others in his party seems to be his lot in life.

  • Hard News: Bad journalism, old stories,

Its pretty sad to see this tainted theroy still getting headlines. When mmr/autism link was big news in the UK it was the right wing press led by the ferociously anti labour Daily Mail that kept it in the headlines. Its a shame to see the Observer falling for the same con trick half a decade later. You would have to wonder what motivates these people to continue barking up the wrong tree. Money perhaps? The ambulance chasing lawyers were lining up in their droves until the theory was totally debunked if I remember rightly.

  • Hard News: Don't Panic,

The reality much more nuanced than the usual "clash of civilisations" bilge. Damned if I know what ought to be done about it though

Didnt Potus recently suggest ending our addiction to oil. It would nice to see the jerk and his mates take the lead on this one but somehow I doubt it. The Hypocrisy of dealing with and enriching the odious Saudi regime while condeming the the likes of Syria and Iran of promoting terrorism should never be understated.

There's a body of opinion that holds that in form, the Islamist "revolutionaries" are more like radical leftists than they are ordinary Muslims.

Didn't Baudrillard consider the 9/11 attacks as an aesthetic spectacle resulting from forces of globalised capitalism? I suppose the post 68 nihilism endemic in contemporary Marxist theory could explain the reason why some on the left find it difficult to condemn the slaughter of civilians by religious fundamentalists. I think most of the 9/11 attackers were well eduacted middle class boys were they not? I just tend to think that hijacking a plane and flying it into the side of a huge building is just a case of plain cruel mass murder.
