Polity: The Taxpayers' Union rides again!, in reply to
the UBI is at the “what if “stage
So why release it? It's one thing for a government to fly kites. But for an opposition? All that does is Key's own job for him, extinguishing the debate before it's even been had.

Thanks Six. This is just a really, really bloody good read. Likewise Tranzspotting.

I can't remember where I first heard this, but apparently boxing has caused more brain injuries since the introduction of padded gloves, because before then, your average pugilist could only land a small number of blows to the head without shredding his knuckles and wrecking his wrist.
What's to stop rugby players wearing body armour and helmets like gridiron players, hockey players ...
Come to think of it, is there any sport apart from rugby where the players DON'T wear protective clothing?

Although you could also label it as the new low in news research.

Speaker: ‘Kiwimeter’ is a methodological…, in reply to
That’s marketing not research
Yeah, true. Not *even* market research.

Speaker: ‘Kiwimeter’ is a methodological…, in reply to
1. Social research objectives, market research method. Massively market oriented client (or at least, survey host) with zero demonstrable or stated interest in social goals.
2. I thought that's what I said.
3. That's certainly true.
4. TVNZ certainly looks like the client. They haven't named any of the academics they refer to, nor their departments, nor disciplines other than "social science." The academics themselves have not been claiming themselves as authors of the report, nor drawing any media attention to any of its findings. In short, they're nowhere to be seen. Which they would be, if they'd put any money or serious amount of time into it.

It’s a standard step that credible survey research organisations build into the development phase. And it is not complicated or expensive shit to do.
I’ve spent many years in the market research biz. Still do occasionally. There’s no way cognitive testing is standard in market research (which 10:1 is how TVNZ would have approached this mess as a client). There is a little bit of piloting but seldom for respondent welfare; more for flow logic etc.
Was cost a reason? Sure. Was it expensive? Enough to slow down a competitive pitch budget. It just wasn’t on the radar. I wouldn’t take that as an indictment of the industry. It’s just not a problem …. unless someone tries to pull something as monumentally misguided (i.e. loaded) as Kiwimeter.
Fair assumption that TVNZ is probably not an experienced social research client. Which matters because in social research the ethical stakes are usually higher, because the topics are usually more provocative.

Speaker: The real problem with the ‘Kiwimeter’, in reply to
except TVNZ is actually now reporting on the online survey results as the results of the 'Kiwimeter'
Good grief, so they are. I see they've learned that Kiwis are fond of sport.
I'm impressed by your attempts to apologise for it on the grounds that it's a worthy subject. But it's nonsense.
HEY! What was the name of that household survey that the Nat government ran in about the year 2000, where they tried to manipulate the results to cut back the welfare budget?

“Māori should not receive any special treatment.”
WTF is "any special treatment"?
-
Speaker: The real problem with the ‘Kiwimeter’, in reply to
does that mean I am in a statistically negligible minority?
It might if the "survey" had adopted any kind of scientifically valid sampling that screened for media consumption.
