  • Hard News: Nurturing Capitalism,

Robin: here's one I prepared earlier.

Yum. Would a PA food blog be too left white middle class? BTW Stephen I made your bagels for brunch when I was staying with friends in Norway recently. They were absolutely delicious and garnered lots of good feedback.

My next feat will be an attempt to make dandelion wine (thank you Mr Bradbury) with the impressive crop my lawn is currently sporting. I may downgrade to just dandelion syrup but either way if anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear about it.

  • Word of the Year 2007,

This just in: Merriam-Webster's have just nominated w00t as their WOTY. W00t! for WOTY!

As someone who both plays a fair amount of games and also likes English, I find this incredibly lame - firstly because no one says woot in a non ironic fashion anymore, and secondly because it has the 0 character in it. If 'u' for 'you' or '2' for 'to' ever make it into a serious dictionary so help me I'm switching to Japanese.

    ...can't find the words...my cyber-crush...is it ending?

    me too merc, me too...

Seriously awesome blog, Tze Ming. To bastardise a potential word of the year, I declare your writing to be super prime. All the best in Geneva.

Also, If you haven't already, jump on a bus to Chamonix and take the cable car up to the top of Mont Blanc. I did it with a couple of mates in January last year and it was a spectacular experience.

Thanks for the tip Rich, yeah I got Cat5e from cables direct, but Dick Smith no longer sells Cat5e patch cables so my comparison would have fallen down. Haven't seen the $2 network cables around, I'll have to keep my eyes out. I agree Stephen that Dick Smith has its place, and pricespy is excellent, though I couldn't find network cables on there.

I wonder if Sony has any whale song CD's, that would be fairly ironic.

Even Dick Smith is a bit ridiculous in some cases. While shopping for network cables for work (Dick Smith was suggested to me) I found the following price comparison for a 3m cat6 patch cable:

    DSE $19.98
www.cablesdirect.co.nz $7.20 (+$4 postage which was spread over ten of them)

Ouch. Glad I took the time to do some research (cheaper still to buy the bits and make your own of course).

Previously I thought that Noel Leeming was just one of a number of reasonably expensive appliance stores. Now I am filled with a sense of mistrust and wouldn't shop there. What were they thinking.

  • Hard News: The Demon E-Word,

"learn how to learn", "dont remeber, just derive", "problem solving skills are better than memory", "method is more important than fact", "active learning" - all this BS I can remember was being held up as the way forward when I was at school in the early 70s. How long do governments need to stick to failed initives before they given it up.

How about this one - to echo what Tom B has been saying, all of those are absolutely key in my industry (Software Development), which is skilled and highly(ish) paid work. I would take a graduate with all those skills over one with the ability to code from memory on a bit of paper. It might be a bit of a special case, but I have a great job precisely because of the emphasis on those skills.

  • Hard News: The Demon E-Word,

Entrepreneurial has a specific meaning which is running a business to make a profit.

This is where he falls over for me. Arbitrarily defining a word to suit your argument just seems weak. Dictionary.com has a slightly different skew:

entrepreneur - a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, esp. a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.

For me it's about seeing an opportunity or need and meeting it with ingenuity, enthusiasm and creativity. Part of what being a New Zealander is all about. I like to think that we are an entrepreneurial country, and have no problem with our curriculum reflecting that.
