Very good to hear that there is progress and that it is in the right direction!

  • Hard News: It was 20 years ago tomorrow ...,

It was the signal point of an unravelling of order that had been in progress for much of the year. Even where blood had been shed – in April, Georgian protesters were massacred by Red Army soldiers, and Chinese students began their protest in Tiananmen Square – the momentum of freedom seemed thrillingly clear.

That June of 1989 was also an amazing time to be in China. It was clear that it was not a time to hang around, but the power of that force for change was both inspiring and frightening. In Eastern Europe there was more of a sense that the people understood what they were asking for and had an idea of what they were liklely to get.

  • Hard News: Miracles just rate better, okay?,

I recall seeing a "segment" (read: ad) on...probably 3 News about these, touting them as basically the next big thing for whatever ails you.

They are quite good for treating decompression illness (bends) in divers, I believe!

  • Hard News: The conversation they want to…,

Or perhaps it's not sexism, but biology, to suggest that it's better for women to conceive a bit younger than they've been trending towards?

    Just a thought...

We have a law (and generally accepted abhorrence?) about procreation between brother and sister or first cousins. The rational basis behind this is to avoid the observed increased risk of spontaneous mutations/deformities that can and do occur.

However, the spontaneous mutation/deformity rate for mothers older than 40 is actually higher.

If we were actually rational be would ban both or neither. But of course we aren't.

  • Hard News: Dead Elephant Frenzy,

    ...a transcription service for voicemail...

A contact is a high volume cellphone user with Vodafone and as a part of his package he gets a 'free' actual person to take his voicemail messages, that are then sent to him by SMS. Since he got the service his voicemail has fallen away to almost nothing. People get a human message taker instead of a recorded message and they just hang up.

  • Hard News: Dead Elephant Frenzy,

I have really had enough of all of this, Baldock, FFNZ et al and their deviant fixation with beating children. Why can't they just STFU and go away.

    A vain hope, I know

This informed consent stuff goes way too far, I reckon

If on the other hand you want to go further, there is an internet site that teaches children how to do brain surgery as well as hip and knee replacement. It's my 8 yo boy's favourite!

    Edheads surgery

Good luck and best wishes Emma!

  • Hard News: Drugs and Sex,

I watched Media 7 for the first time last night (now it is on Sky) and the bits I heard (through crying baby) were really good.

So did I... and I enjoyed the 3/4 that I saw. The MySky record function cut off the last 1/4
