And I'm not sure why we need to reinstate an antiquated system that has its origins in the medieval era. What's next? Burning witches? (Oops, better not go giving the Act Party ideas...)

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

Leviticus. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. Can't these fundies see I wear glasses and just leave me alone?

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

I had quite a few Christian friends when I was at University and they never seemed to tire of trying to convert me. Nothing would deter them - not even an offer to introduce them to my own imaginary friend.

On one occasion I was invited to a party by one of these friends, and I figured "well he likes a beer, so how bad can it be?" I walked straight into an ambush - there were hordes of the buggers and not a drop to drink. It was like being in a den of zombies, all of whom wanted my soul.

One thing I've noticed whenever I've been in the company of more than a few of these God-Type-Persons is that everyone who is over 18 years old seems to be a pastor. Which must be the equivalent of the modern day work practice of calling everyone above the janitor a manager. Who says the church doesn't keep up with the times?

Meh... any reputation that can be materially damaged by a 'roid on the body politics like Michael Laws, probably isn't worth defending.

Agree, to a point. He clearly has an audience of devoted listeners. And we all know what the bite of a rabid dog can lead to.

Did he name any names, or just froth in general?

No names, but if he had named someone there may have been work for defamation lawyers.

The protest must have gained some traction, judging by the response of one particularly rabid media "commentator" (I hesitate to use the word - does it give him some kind of status?).

Michael Laws was spitting and frothing at the mouth on his radio show this morning over the blogging community and the s92A protest.

(no I don't normally listen to him - I was in the car and the radio was on... honest to God)

He used the s92A debate to say some extraordinarily vicious things about bloggers generally (the usual never-wash, have-no-girlfriend stuff).

According to Mr Laws bloggers should be addressing more important social issues, like world hunger and war.

His message possibly lost some of its power, however, when straight afterwards he started taking calls on how nice it was to have your own vegetable garden.

Needless to say I changed radio stations, only to find David Slack on 9 till Noon discussing the benefits of having your own vegetable garden...

  • Hard News: High Noon,

However, I've reluctantly come round to the position that hanging them in gibbets at the side of the road is probably not a good idea.

Agreed. Something like that would need a resource consent.

Yes. More people in prison, but not more people thrown in prison.

Except that I assume the power of a judge to order a non-custodial sentence for the third offence would be removed by the Bill - is this correct?

In which case possibly more people thrown in prison. Admittedly, not many more, but hey, I'm a pedant.
