  • Legal Beagle: Think it possible that you…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

And when is our turn, Graeme? When?

But you got Willie and JT off the air: surely it’s your turn now?

If I'm being offered a radio show, this is the first I've heard of it.

  • Legal Beagle: Think it possible that you…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

The kinds of culture war censorship that Graeme alludes to don’t have parallel support in this country and I doubt they ever will.

Some bookstores have pulled Into the River.

This is not what banning a book looks like. It's still freely available , it's just not stocked in some stores.

  • Legal Beagle: Think it possible that you…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

I’m hearing overtones of a fancied up version of “women, get to the back of the bus and wait your turn” in this analysis.

Well, I certainly didn’t expect everyone to agree with me, but I wasn’t anticipating this response.

I guess maybe I suggesting that the better option is to take your turn at the same time as others, rather than silencing others so you can speak?

And when is our turn, Graeme? When?
Nobody is preventing Jackson and Tamihere from speaking freely, only from having a particular commercial platform from which to do so. If only we could all get a personal radio show as part of our right to free speech!

ETA: snap, Deborah, hadn't seen your reply.

  • Up Front: To the Letter, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

we had neighbours who used to boast how they were descended from Robert the Bruce

If you figure out how many generations that is, you can work out how many thousand descendants he probably has, and also what vanishingly-small percentage of his DNA your neighbours are likely to have. Even if they're right. ;-)

  • Hard News: Friday: A happier place,

Had to post this: Lorde on Letterman !!
A very assured performance. She owns that stage.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Kracklite,

Lilith, I just saw your comment under Rudman’s column. Thank you very much.

I'm glad if you're not taking what he says to heart. Because he obviously has no idea what a troll is, or how online discussion works...or anything, really. And his attitude to Aspergers, and people who have it? Ignorant and stupid.

    church, Awhitu Peninsula, 1989
Had to try match your triptych Lilith, which is stunning. :-)

Why thank you! And yours is beautiful. Another tiny and perfectly-kept church! Mine at Moeraki is a small immaculate form in a large and rugged landscape.

    Of course I thought:
    I am a little church(no great cathedral) :-)

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?, in reply to nzlemming,

You and me both. It’s a royal pain. Very occasionally, my wanting-to-go-to-sleepness coincides with what people call bedtime

Large doses of melatonin just before bed will send me to sleep, but then I pop awake in the small hours. Melatonin’s half-life is only 50 mins, so I guess that makes sense.

If I wake during the night I usually get up and do something. Sometimes I have breakfast at 4.30am and read or write for a couple of hours before going back to bed and sleep.

My sleep is highly variable day-to-day, both in timing and duration, but I've found that over a week the duration averages out to a fairly consistent number of hours. Fascinating.
