Cool Keith front page of /.
Discussion of the effectiveness of various forms of cryptography is fraught, it's not to be done by amateurs, and most of the professionals seem to work for 3-letter agencies, don't forget that the NSA helped set up TOR and have blessed various forms of crypto that are in common use - we honestly don't know why they blessed them - because they were good? or because they can be broken by the agency?
Recently we've all learned that the old maxim "you're not paranoid if they really are out to get you" applies to being worried about secret police reading all your online communications too
Even your tinfoil hats come from Rio Tinto, they're still great for keeping off the solar radiation though, not so much for wifi http://web.archive.org/web/20120411235930/http://berkeley.intel-research.net/arahimi/helmet/
Seriously though, given Key's recent almost-admission in parliament (I mean he would have said "no" if he could wouldn't he?) what did the US give the GCSB millions of dollars for?

Some tightening of national security policy across the globe was to be expected following 9/11. But when such measures are tightened far beyond their original intention - and/or far beyond their use-by date - it's tantamount to a permanent state of emergency, which from past historical precedent is an early sign of dictatorialism.
I think it's an indication that the terrorists are winning and we (the western public) are losing

"I hesitate to draw parallels with history, but I wonder how those now running the surveillance state – and their appeasers – would have behaved under the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century.
They'd be doing the exact same thing but with more personal power ... it's these same sort of people who ran the Stasi and the McCarthy witch hunts and (avoids godwin-trap) - they would have been the totalitarian regimes - I'm sure they think that we have too much freedom as it is and that we all need to be kept an eye on for our own good

I think that Dunne knows that he and his party are toast and all he has left is his sinecure - of course if he really wanted to actually try for the votes he'd take a stand and do the decent thing rather than sell his vote to the highest bidder
