The issue of historic abuse won't go away. The Confidential Listening and Assistance Service has now been closed but their last report highlights numerous examples of abuse and injustice (clever journalist embedded link to OIA'd report in this article). This government doesn't care but a future one will have to have an inquiry and an apology. A fast track process is not the same as a morally restorative State apology. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/71388571/generation-of-children-brutalised-in-state-care-wont-get-public-apology

NZTA people are obviously not cyclists.
They also got it very wrong on Wellington's silly flyover too, but fortunately the people eventually won. -

Another issue to make submissions on (as if we didn't have enough to do!). The Justice review on family violence could be detrimental for adults with autism etc who are susceptible to sensory related meltdowns. There is already a major lack of support for them and their families. But it is a good chance to tell the government about the realities. Thanks to community campaigner Mike Grigg of Wainuiomata who has already raised the issue in this recent article.
Info about the review and link to (very large) discussion document. Responses due 18 September.

Thanks Gordon. I didn't feel comfortable using that term although it seems to be readily used by some, and is even on the Polio NZ website. The other contentious word - and one I avoid - is 'victim'.

Setting up the company may be a legal thing - I imagine there is some risk for such a service. Carers NZ is a peak body, not a service provider. This is a new service by a new service provider.

I think MyCare is a contract that Carers NZ won a while ago (at least a year or so) from the Ministry of Health to create a website or some other mechanism linking up respite carers with those looking for respite care. It is here being marketed to those in elder care, but I have heard it mentioned several times in the last couple of years by Ministry people in the context of disabled (particularly autistic) children and families looking for respite care. That has been a big issue for some families as respite care is very hard to find. It tied in with policies also mentioned a few years ago of bulk funding families through IF or similar. So certainly would fit in with a voucher scheme.
It would be good for someone to go to one of those Auckland meetings and report back.

Re abuse, there was a fascinating but awful documentary on Prime a couple of weeks ago called Little Criminals. It was based on David Cohen's book of the same name about the Epuni Boys' Home. Several people who had experienced the heartlessness of state care told their stories. Unfortunately, Prime replays are not very accessible. You have to join up to SkyGo to view. State funded documentary about state funded abuse - but you can't see it unless you sign up to a private provider.
