  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line,

Maybe its that then; some sort of straight-boy cock upper-limit? It'd explain why I like drag queens too!

Wow, I wandered off to make a cup of coffee and it occurred to me that I'd set myself up for someone to speculate how the limit was measured; appearances or centermetres... but... nothing... phew.

Or even E.M Forster's Maurice -- which could most charitably be described as Lady Chatterley with fifty percent more cock.

I think the main problem is that Lucas was trying to mirror the performances of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, who were both (let us not forget) incredibly young at the time of shooting Episode IV.

I think this is a key part of the explanation; the actors were better in the first trilogy. A friend's theory is that despite the patent silliness of the first three movies, the actors played it straight plus there were fewer gags to take you out of the moment whereas the second three lacked actors who could pull off the drama.

and I hope her ACC levy hasn't gone through the roof after handling such a load of tosh Mills & Boon would have rejected with extreme prejudice.

Is this the right time to say I liked the book?

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line, in reply to Isabel Hitchings,

My nearly-6 year old discovered Star Wars at Christmas from other kids staying with us. I felt like she'd been cheated when she started with Episode 1, that she'd missed out on what was actually a revolutionary moment in cinema.

I wonder what her equivalent experience will be? I took her to see the Disney 3D update on Rapunzel, which she liked a lot, but still didn't seem to have have the impact Star Wars did on me. Actually, thinking back, we took her to the open air cinema in Sydney a year or so ago to see Mama Mia... that she loved.

What a great new feature on PA! I don't squee particularly but am most certainly a fan.

Craig, looking forward to your columns. I'll be disappointed if the smut quotient drops.

I agree with Ben though I note Craig's warned us against getting him grumpy... some of his best work is when he's got his twatcock on max!

I wish I could be a little more high-minded, but I had my sense of womder kicked into gear in a dark cinema at the age of five:

Ditto for me; in fact I can't think of another movie that so entirely engrossed me but then I was a kid. I regret now that I didn't take care of or keep my collection of figurines and posters and what-not; I even had two albums of the first two movies that I would listen to most weekends.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea, in reply to Rich Lock,

We talked about Sebastian Junger's 'Restrepo' book a while back.

It's called just "War" in Australia and, as I missed the earlier conversation, I thought it was a compelling book.

(I did grow up in Mairangi Bay, incidentally, but escaped.)

Escaped? I've visited Mairangi Bay a couple of times on return visits over Christmas and been stunned by how easy it is to get to and how lovely it is for young kids. I'd happily escape from Sydney to Mairangi Bay... or is there something I'm missing from my quick visits?

There seem to be a growing number of locations with residents demanding the construction of sandy beaches where none ever existed.

Hey, Alastair's ever so politely calling you out Mr Brown... but'srriously, thanks for the very helpful post Alastair.

I love love love Christchurch beaches, they are a huge asset for the city: full of natural sand and great waves. Sadly, they're only swimable without a wetsuit in the hottest part of summer. We really need our pools to learn to swim in.

Lilith, I lived in Sumner for about a year, it's one of my favourite beaches, but I completely agree with your point about the weather/temp.

This is what they have at Pt Erin, I've been going for a couple of weeks. My wife got in free, because she was a "non-swimming guardian", meaning she was basically looking after my 1-year old. Both the under 5s got in free, and I had to pay for myself. So the whole family cost under $5. Awesomeness.

That's comparable to the deal we had for my 5 year old at another local pool, the Ian Thorpe Acquatic Centre. I should say that in my entirely personal comparison of Sydney and NZ, I think swimming is much more popular here not least of all since the weather's warmer...
