  • Hard News: Invasion of the pagan matrons,

After the third time all the entrees start to look the same though.

It's surprising how much similarity there is. And the organisers are quite ruthless with grouping all the like stuff together. You've made a Marie Antoinette dress? Yeah, well, so have all these other people, so yours had better be great.

I'm not fond of anything that looks like I could buy it from a clothing shop or rent from a costume hire place. But there are many sparks of orginality among the giant lizards and grass skirts.

But the wearable art itself isn't really what's worth going there for. It's all about the stagecraft - the choreography, lighting, sets and theatrical trickery. That's the real star of the show.

11.34am: Of all the people to post first, Trevor Mallard on Red Alert

11.50am approx: Stuff (their timestamp appears to be the story before the video went up)

The video on Stuff was up earlier than 11.50. I got an email from a workmate at 11.31 linking to it, so it was up well before Trev's post.

  • Field Theory: Good Deeds,

What a lovely story! Awesome in a "the interwebs brings us together" way, but also with a good old fashined dose of serindipity. I love it when stuff like this happens. Nice one, Hadyn!

  • Hard News: Bowie for the BDO?,

I recently had dinner with my parents at Floriditas. Superb parent-friendly food, but holy crap, it can get noisy in there with all the hard surfaces. I've enjoyed parental nomz at Sweet Mother's Kitchen, but that's a bit more of an informal eatery.

    Also:

My darling and I take off in a few hours to enjoy a weekend in Wellington attending the World of Wearable Art Awards

OMG, me too, etc. In fact, I'll be there with Miss Kowhai and Miss Johubris. It's going to be good.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

I've been doing some delving and have found this photo of the King's Arms from the late 19th century (compare and contrast with the present day), back when it was a corner pub (before they took the corner away) and when it had an external lantern. Lanterns, along with the corner location, were a licensing requirement - it was a cheap way for the authorities to get street lighting and to hopefully attract a better class of boozer to the neighbourhood.

  • Discussion: Closer to Home?,

A lot of the Your Views comments seem to be from expats whose image of contemporary New Zealand is almost entirely informed by what they've read in the news. So it's all child abuse and murders and W(h)anganui. Because "Wow! Isn't the waterfront really beautiful today!" or "Hey, there's a really cool new bar that does an amazing cocktail with pumpkin in it" never (usually) makes it to the front page of the news websites, these expats focus on the bad news and miss out on the cool, ordinary stuff that makes living in New Zealand so awesome. No wonder they don't like the idea of returning.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

But has anyone else found themselves vowing never to return to the King's Arms after an international gig in the past year or two?

So much about the King's Arms is wrong - the main entrance is by the front of the stage, the bar takes up too much horizontal space, forcing the crowd down the back, the outside doors near the front can't be opened any more so it gets really hot in summer.

But yet it's there, and when the place isn't packed out it's a decent enough venue in a handy part of town.

Regardless of how shit the King's Arms is or isn't, it still doesn't deserve to be treated like some suburban wine bar.

  • Up Front: Actors Don't Hunt in Packs,

There's a lot of Shakespeare in your CV! This reminds me that the Shakespeare Club at my high school, they were the smartest and (secretly) filthiest kids.

  • On Morals,

But I am starting to suspect not only that there are major differences between the urban areas, but also wildly diverse differences within urban areas.

My favourite anecdote around this is an interview with the Chief Censor, where he revealed that they'd stopped using Wellingtonians for test audiences because they were just too different to the rest of NZ. Auckland, however, was varied enough.
