You know who enjoyed the game? Garth George. How can you defend that test cricket fans?

I had a profound crisis of faith this morning after seeing that article. Until now I have always lived by Garth's Law - which posits that if Garth George says something is desirable or good, I must oppose that thing with every ounce of my being.

Mind you, Robert Mugabe is a huge cricket fan too.

I've seen plenty of cricket draws, and not all of them were memorable. For a while in the late 80s and early 90s it felt like every game we played at home was a draw. On the other hand, I still remember Perth 89/90 when Greatbatch appeared to bat forever to save a game that seemed doomed. I don't think any NZ supporters thought that game was dull.

The option of a draw is one of the many things that makes the game so appealing. Don't mess with the draw, man!

  • Random Play: A gift that keeps on giving,

No criticism of your comments on the Sydney Opera House and Utzon but proposing to lift an idea from Sydney as a way of injecting originality into Auckland simply because an anniversary pops up seems odd.

People have been talking for years about doing something with Auckland's waterfront. I don't think this is something new.

The buildings are not up to Paris standards but what other city has buildings of that order anyway?

Auckland central did have a lot of lovely buildings not so long ago. But successive councils have let developers demolish them, or allowed facadism to blight the city.

All great cities have iconic buildings. Why shouldn't we in Auckland aspire to be a great city?

To transform the Auckland waterfront requires vision. I've no doubt that visionaries exist in our city. But the long history of Auckland local body politics suggests that change, if any, will be gradual and incremental, and will occur only after enormous resistance.

One only has to remember the hysteria about removing a few trees from Queen Street.

Particularly since such views tend to lead to things liek this?

In that case I withdraw my opposition to John Banks' candidacy.

I thought they could also add the rest of the Waikato, the Manawatu and the South Island. They could call the resulting supercity "New Zealand".

Wouldn't those places all just become "South Auckland"?

I'm cautiously in favour of the supercity concept, if it will ensure basic services can be provided cheaper and more efficiently. What bothers me are:

    1. the potential loss of any local voice. I think this is a legitimate concern that needs to be addressed.

    2. Please, PLEASE, don't let us have a "Lord Mayor". The title has all sorts of connotations. Do we need the rest of the country thinking we're lording it over them?

    3. John Banks. Banks was campaigning for mayor of the supercity before the recommedation was even made. He's probably got a good shot at getting the job.

    4. Bureaucracy. We assume there will be efficiency gains, but can we be sure? Or are we just going to end up with a giant monster?

What, so you don't think difficult cases should be determined by the Herald's Your Views?
