  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…,

OK, I think I'll be removing my business from Tower and explaining why.

I'm not with Tower, but I just expressed my rage on facebook with a link to David's story. Regret this they will.

(Also, I found State to be bastards, AMI seem to have been fair to date).

Best of luck getting it fixed guys.

    Ahem. Techno-hippy.

You can't just prefix a word with 'techno' and pretend you're fly for a white guy.

Lyndon – I have asked for a copy of this letter but my understanding is that the PM did not have Judge Becroft’s permission to table that letter.
It intrigues me because Judge Becroft has not been a supporter of boot camps in the past.

I was at a lecture he gave a couple of weeks before that letter where he indicated that he didn't think they were very effective - quoted research showing that participants had a 90% recidivism rate (I presume that's international research).

And then after the lecture he went out and bought Kronic. Down with the kids apparently.

  • Hard News: Rough times in the trade,

Seriously, though, when’s the last time you heard a piece of music that made you think this is really new, as opposed to this is really good?

New to me is quite different from new to the world. Not being particularly down with the kids, the last "hot thing" I knew about before it reached NZ was Hootie and the Blowfish, as I'd been in the states with a friend who saw them in a bar in Myrtle Beach well before they were released in NZ.

But Mirah is pretty good (no doubt dozens of you will already have heard her).

There is no reason why we can’t mobilise resources to help professions like journalism respond to the current technological shifts, and not only continue to fulfill their function but serve us in fact significantly better than they did in the old media.

    +1.

This is what disappoints me about the "copyright debate". That it's presented as a choice between "everything free, artists have to completely change how they work and if they can't they're screwed" vs "copyright lock down, turn your internet off, take you to court".

Rather than thinking about a sensible way forward which completely re-writes copyright and thinks about alternative ways to ensure that society has good levels of culture in various fields by people who get paid a reasonable amount of money for doing it.

Copyright was developed in part because of technology moving forward, it's not unreasonable to assume that technology would again be the death of it and require something new to come about.

No slight intended. Library and archive professionals have different training, different priorities and different personal networks to people who have worked in or around, say, the music business.

I'm with Paynter and Tamsin6 in that there's nothing to prevent librarians from doing this. In my previous job I used to have to get copyright and other clearances for artworks, cartoons, pieces of text. The librarians at National Archives and Hocken Collections were tremendously helpful at making that happen. There's nothing preventing librarians with expertise and experience in music fields from doing similar work.

I suspect the problem is more with funding. Our local archives - Hocken Collections - struggles to find enough funds to archive everything properly, let alone make it publicly available. Archives that are able to make their materials available to the public in the ways that are being talked about here cost a lot of money.

  • Up Front: Respectably-Dressed Sensible…,

I’ve been thinking about what’s so wrong about comparing rape prevention with theft prevention (not walking home alone is like locking your car, etc.)

They're fundamentally different actions. You have the right not to have your property interfered with, but no fundamental right to leave it unlocked - it's just common sense.

Being able to dress in a particular way and drink alcohol (and not be raped) are basic freedom of expression and movement rights, on top of the right not to be raped. We shouldn't deprive potential rape victims of the right to dress in ways that show off their body, or have too much to drink (or, be in their home with someone that they know) because there are rapists.

But I doubt the MPs’ reticence in the mainstream media was because they were worried about hypocrisy. They were worried about votes.

Well yes. I marked down all the parties that attended.

Destiny’s actually claiming profits from its Community Max projects.
    That’s not normal, is it?

I would have thought that profit is part of the reason various organisations get into this business. You can meet the outcomes with less cost, you make some money. You screw up, it ends up costing you?

Being able to state a clear position on humans rights and sexuality need not mean slagging off your hosts.

Oh absolutely Russell. But they should say that in the room if they're going to say it outside. Being all nice inside, and then coming out afterwards and slagging Destiny off on Campbell Live would be hypocritical.
