Has anyone other than Matthew Ridge actually expressed anything negative about his admitted behaviour?
not that i've heard. i actually heard a dj on george fm the other day bemoaning his perception that "poor old tony veitch is about to be hung, drawn and quartered".
poor old tony veitch? never mind all the (admittedly sinister) stuff about whose PR team is winning the media battle ... there is a version of "surely not good old tony, he's such a good bloke" going on here. if he gets away with it, it'll be because of that process. people just won't believe it.
if i hear one more media personality / non-personality saying "veitchy" i think i will be sick.

it's nice to know there's so many other people who loathe traditional weddings. i wore a red dress, refused to let people give us gifts, instead had everyone we knew contribute something (cake, photos, design the dress, do the makeup etc) - in spite of which some people insisted on giving us money. we came out about $800 ahead. i never knew anyone else who actually made money out of their wedding.
i went to a friend's wedding which was one of those swimming in roses, white meringue of a dress affairs - every last detail analysed and prepared - and yet they still managed to walk into their reception to the tune "i got the wandering eye" by fat freddy's drop. well done fellas. well done.

does "reduced" imply that he previously had a higher appreciation? i'm still waiting for my little one to develop it. he's only twenty months tho, so i might be waiting for a while ......

thanks for this post russell - i read that story and felt sad, offended and disgusted. how the media are treating this boy also raises the question - when does punishment end?
Portraying this sad, sad boy as somehow a 'winner' who is now creaming it with his new shoes, stereo and Playstation in South Auckland is pathetic

to my horror, it was my family who had to face up to child cancer, just before christmas in 2005. my little niece, just 18 months old, was diagnosed with leukemia. it was a rare form, one in a million type of leukemia. but she got the best match in terms of a bone marrow transplant, and incredibly, she has survived. she turns four in june.
i won't go into the sheer, unending horror that was her treatment for herself, her parents and for the rest of us who love her dearly and could only hope and hope and hope that she would be well again.
thank you so much for this post - and thanks to anyone who has enough disposable income to donate to the starship oncology ward cause - these are amazing people, doing an amazing job, against the odds.
i'll send the link for this post to her mum - no doubt it will put her into tears again, but she might just come and have a look at the exhibition with me, too.

on a positive note, i caught a bit of TVNZ7 news at 8pm last night, it wasn't too bad. Definitely more in-depth that the tv one infotainment

i first started noticing the intrusive way cameras remained trained on extremely distressed family members talking about the loss of a loved one (or some other harrowing event) in the 90s. i think it might have been on holmes. i remember criticising it at the time, and switching off the telly.
i must say, damian, you're the first person i've ever heard making a statement like that i.e. that you're not going to interview people in those situations any more. good for you. if there were more journalists interested in actual journalism, maybe we'd all be a bit better informed and a bit less interested in the voyeurism that current affairs reporting seems to have become in this country.
are you related to a psychiatrist in auckland by the name of christie by the way?
