Those women are so brave and must be so angry. Photo here of them in the foyer together following their walk out or ejections. Interestingly, the article is by one of the press gallery women who is usually very supportive of the PM

Speaker totally out of his depth. What a mess.

This is both a clever and desperate tactic by the PM. By labelling people in this way he portrays them as less than human, therefore not worthy of rights or even empathy. He has to persuade the public and commentators of this.
If this doesn't work, not only the detainees but all those other groups facing discrimination and demanding rights and resources will have to be considered officially human and therefore have rights. These include people with mental illness (such as those in jail denied their medication), refugees, beneficiaries, disabled people, and my current interest - children with special educational needs.
(By the way the new Australian minister for disability issues has helped with this othering by calling disabled people a burden on the state)

I agree. I am really looking forward to having a regular income like this in a few years' time (if it is still there). No money in research these days, and I missed years of regular full-time employment through caring responsibilities.

I think it is time we treated obesity (awful blaming word) as an impairment or even a chemical addiction for some people and respond with a version of the social model of disability. (Whereby people have impairments but society disables - therefore society as a whole has a responsibility to address the obesigenic /disabling environments, policies and attitudes which construct 'obesity'.)

Of course another approach would be to recentralise and renationalise electricity generation and supply including lines so there would be one centralised provider, database etc etc. And much cheaper electricity and incentives for solar and wind too. After all New Zealanders built the system so we shouldn't be paying a whole lot of money to middle people or overseas corporates.

Yes as far as Otaki and the Wairarapa. Great tradition of the Free Ambulance Service. They also give free advice and come and attend to accidents in the home all no charge. Wellingtonians fundraise hard to keep the service though.

Just to show that there is disability activism in all sorts of places here is a story about the brother of the first woman jockey to win the Melbourne Cup today. Her brother with Down Syndrome was employed to prepare the horse for the win.
