  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

Back when I had a car, I really enjoyed DRIVING AROUND AIMLESSLY on a weekend afternoon. It's a nice time to just spend by myself, physically occupied, with the ability to just let me mind wander (but not too far).

Aimful driving is boring. Give me aimless or give me public transport.

Yeh, and even later bits such as Waltz Darling added ambience and operatic orchestralism to pop sounds which certainly influenced post-house electronica in the 90s & 00s.

The video for Waltz Darling is also notable. It features voguing, a couple of years before Madonna picked up on it.

Not to mention it's a lush, lovely pop song.

"The record companies still think that home taping is the curse of the industry. It's been one of the greatest assets that popular music has had invented for it!"

    C30, C60, C90, go!

Policeman stopped me in my tracks
said "Hey you, you can't tape that
you're under arrest 'cause it's illegal"
So I shoved him off and blew his whistle
I'm a pirate and I keep my loot
So I blew him out with my bazooka

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

Sunday trading (in alcohol) only started in December 1999. Must've been hell for some before then.

Giving the sight of supermarkets on the Thursday and Saturday, you'd think that people were stocking up in advance of some sort of natural disaster.

Or perhaps people were stocking up on the last remaining packets of CC's.

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

In my old telly job, there was the possibility of working any public holiday. Before I started the job, the notion of doing this seemed utterly outrageous, but after four years, it was just another day at work, only quieter and with no annoying phone calls.

I was quite happy to work on, say, New Year's Day, because it meant I'd get paid time-and-a-half, and get another day off whenever I felt like it.

In fact, in a much it's nicer having a long weekend of my choice when the shops are open, rather than dealing with the closed-open-closed-open-ish of Easter Weekend.

But on the other hand, I know people with kids who had to work public holidays and they find it a struggle and an annoyance.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

More Who geekery - all the regenerations:

The very first one is simple and yet surprisingly moving. The ones after that either exist as a showcase of the latest in special effects technology, or are kind of crappy low-tech ones where Doctor A lies down then Doctor B sits up. And lots of bad acting from the supporting cast.

Seeing the newer regenerations, complete with the spewing golden light, is much more thrilling, yet not without emotion - "I don't want to go!"

Robyn? Does "Clean Peter Davison opening" mean that somewhere there is a Dirty Peter Davison opening?

    Tom's coming!

My favourite version of the theme tune:

It's those '70s glam rock guitars, man.

BTW, my first Doctor - Tom Baker.

Therefore I am tickled by the Pop Bitch story that he is known to shout "Tom's coming!" at the point of orgasm.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

The only thing that seemed to make a major impression on the kids was the sight of Weeping Angels in the series trailer at the end, which made even my fifteen year old boy spontaneously gasp.

I was sitting there, watching the upcoming highlights with glee, and suddenly, OMG, the angels! Right, there's another episode I'll be watching through my fingers.
