Just said “the psychos are coming”.

It does seem to me that that line in particular is a breach of the broadcasting standards.

That in addition to the blatantly deceptive reporting of the numbers is well outside the standards.

Unless they can explain exactly what more they would do

Well first up, a responsible government would have called out Australia on it's human rights abuses at the UN.

And yes I know we're really good mates with Australia but frankly if your mate is beating up it's own then your should be calling them out on it - in public if necessary.

Second we could have NZ consulate staff on the ground at Christmas island taking names and numbers and making damn sure no NZ citizen is being harmed by a foreign country. Preferably with a press corp as well to make sure everything is kept open and public. And yes if necessary NZ police to care for and protect NZ detainees.

Third when asked sensible, reasonable questions in parliament our PM could stop referring to our citizens as rapists with no evidence whatsoever. He could desist from name calling and actually behave like an adult with a real job.

What doesn't happen is that you get sent to some other detention centre after your sentence has been served and kept there.

Getting punished twice for one crime.

And the person who should be supporting you giving you the finger.

The problem as always is that middle NZ will be thinking

"I kind of agree with that stand up guy John Key - we don't want those nasty criminals to come back to NZ"

Key knows his audience, it certainly isn't us here, and it isn't the parliamentary press gallery. He has now framed Labour as supporters of rapists, as dishonest and irresponsible as that framing is. He should have been ejected from the house but he got away with it.

Never mind that those New Zealand citizens on Christmas island may well have relatively minor criminal records, never mind that the job of PM doesn't have an exclusion clause that allows you to ignore citizens you don't really like. John Key plays to his audience and he wins because of it.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet, in reply to Jason Kemp,

I’m curious as to why 3D was moved from Sunday night where it had viewers to a slot on Monday where it was doomed to fail.

Because management wanted it to fail in order to give them a reason the kill it.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet, in reply to Russell Brown,

I still don’t think that’s the case. Seems too crazy, despite the circumstantial evidence. I’m leaning more toward another diagnosis: incompetence.

It is interesting how long people will persist in denying the obvious, even long after the train has run them over and the accident inspector has blamed them for ignoring the alarm bells.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet,

    Nice post, but depressing.

From all the discussion here and input from folks who actually know shit it just seems that TV3 management have made a decision to go in a particular direction. From everything I've read about Weldon and Christie they won't ever admit they have made the wrong call, even long after the company goes into receivership and they been fired. It will never have been their fault that the plan failed just that people failed to understand what they were achieving.

Meanwhile we lose yet another source of journalism in NZ.

We could always vote in a government that actually valued journalism and was willing to spend tax dollars on maintaining it, or put our own money into scoop.

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance, in reply to Russell Brown,

Not even remotely true. Nearly all the All Blacks’ matches are against Tier 1 nations and most of them are in the Rugby Championship

Really? You're going to go with none of the tier 1 nations are easy wins? "history All Blacks vs ..." suggests that only four nations are a serious challenge.

I do think the All Blacks are a great team but I don't think the overall win percentage is a good measure. Apart from Australia, South Africa, England and France there are no teams that are serious challenges. To some degree that emphasises how good the All Blacks are but it also highlights just how poor the Rugby is that is played by most nations.

You want a good measure - then look at how many points the All Blacks score in the last 20 minutes of their matches, that is a mark of just how good they are - when players are tired and hurting the All Blacks passes are timed, their kick bounce up into the hands, they own the loose ball. That is a good measure.

Or you could look at their record against those nations why take rugby seriously - that is a good measure.

    Just not overall wins.

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance,

I kinda hate these stats for Rugby. People quote those percentages as if all those games are the same standard. The reality is there are only a handful of countries playing Rugby seriously and our stats against those countries are nowhere near as dominant. Essentially the numbers get puffed up by playing the other nations.

That's true in most competitions but I'd suggest that the NBA is a much more even competition and so dominance is much harder, same for baseball and same for football (the roundball version).

Not taking away from the performance of this team but those stats just don't do it for me - much compelling is the way they play.
