Had intended to attend the Modern Liberty Convention in London over the weekend, though tickets had sold out.

That was great fun. I'm sure somebody was scandalised.
Enjoyment wasn't initially my response. I'm now grateful for David & Kim's conversation. Life seems much more tolerable since they stopped talking about peeing.

Oh...that seems much more in line with the Ben Goldacre on "Jennifer Alba has the perfect wiggle".
I like Ben's final words in the [[http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/sep/01/1|Guardian on that story.
These stories do nothing to promote science. They sell products and pay money, misrepresent the notion of doing research, and sell the idea that scientists are irrelevant boffins.

I think this article deals with a bunch of topics, all of which may or may not be relevant background info for your mission.

Just to clarify am I correct in thinking you want to be pointed as cases where the supposed benefit/aims of the research are dubious, rather than producing (surprisingly) unrepeatable data, or the interpretation in the media thereafter is bung (ie the Ben Goldacre corner of the universe).
Perhaps the following a bit obscure for you....Coen bros salute clean-coal.

Seconded. The BBC Friday Night Comedy podcast is a never-miss for us.
So I don't need to tell you about the Icelandic-Prime Minister-Scandinavian-Lesbian section from a couple of weeks back then? Sandi Toksvig is one cool cat!

so I take it you all haven't been following the beekeeping RadioNZ bee show? Might have a few answers...esp as tutin is mentioned this week.

Coincidentally I've just listened (coz they offer the pod as both Audio & Video) to the Media7 Science reporting piece and gone looking to see if Ben Goldacre has made available his thoughts on Science & the Media in podcast form. Ben aint so keen on mere hacks doing science reporting, which is not to say he's against specialist reporters covering science.
Anyway I see Ben has got involved in the Social Networking causes brain rewiring issue...which was also a story that the NZ Herald had picked up.
So Ben participated in a discussion on Newsnight.

Just been checking out the Kiwi Foo vids. Damian Conway seems to have a good understanding.
