  • Hard News: Welfare: Back to the Future?,

transferred to a government work scheme

and access to free contraception - sounds like something Alfred Rosenberg (responsible for the racial policies of the third reich) could have written.
But one thing I'm really not sure on - we don't actually have an over-population issue right? So why is contraception for those on benefits seen as a desirable thing? Because poor people make worse parents? It's not just creepy it's disgusting.

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

National will get many many more votes from employees than it does from employers

    Not this employee they won't.

it's the government looking after its core constituency, at the expense of others

No surprise there either. I didn't vote for them for that very reason.
That said, I do think the proposal for a doctor's note after 1 sick day and the selling back of annual leave is frankly nuts. In the "enlightened" EU some employers offer unlimited sick leave and 6 weeks + annual leave. I know, it's not really comparing apples with apples ...
But, is this really the best National has to offer for economic stimulous? Not forgetting the national cycle way of course.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

Heh, I once recommended against hiring this guy based on the fact that he mentioned that he was a fan of Coronation Street.

Such blatant prejudice - I'm guessing he was ginga as well?

But back to the tv question ... after returning recently from a couple of years in Melbourne all I can say is more of the same. Same shows, shown in the same order back to back on identikit channels. Thankfully Campbell Live and Close Up haven't quite degenerated to the depths of Today Tonight - but it can't be long.
For the future - I'd like a feature that tells me what other people who've watched this programme are also watching (regardless of channel/source). And (idealistically) I'd like a people's choice where you can vote on upcoming programming a season ahead (maybe in return for paying a fee?).

  • Hard News: There is History,

Re the media coverage, it’s almost as if there is some feeling of national importance in that we’re at the forefront of “developed” infected countries.
We’ve got groups of potentially infected schoolkids and Australia has ... nothing.

Well as I tuned in for my daily dose of blonde plastic on breakfast TV this morning ... I must admit I almost choked on my cuppa when Ditsy/Mitsy/FiFi or somesuch announced the headline "and further to the swine flu pandemic story, 10 New Zealand students have been quarrantined".
I'm not sure if it was hearing the words New Zealand or seeing the Rangitoto College logo or the words 'swine flu' that made me take notice most.
Actually I think it was the words New Zealand since we've gone a whole Anzac Day weekend without a mention.
    Overheard in a Fitzroy cafe;
Aussie to Kiwi "So why are you guys so interested in Anzac Day anyway?"
Kiwi response "Well ... um ... what do you think the N Z in Anzac stands for?"

  • Hard News: There is History,

Actually that's not entirely true the single best way to limit the spread is for people to wash their hands with soap and water for one rendition of Happy Birthday. Seriously :).

I was living in Toronto when SARS broke out there. And yes staying home if you felt sick was actively encouraged. I also recall that every public building from office blocks to banks had a decontamination point on the front door or lobby dishing out squirts of hand sanitiser. Washing your hands is one of the single easiest and most effective things you can do.
I do recall stocking up on 36 toilet rolls ... oh wait, that was an online shopping order gone wrong.

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

Sean Penn as Harvey Milk ... has to win an Oscar for that performance - sublime.

... and while Christian nuts off, let's not foget 'our' Russ and the telephone ... if only that would rule him out of any possible future Oscar nominations ...

And this item from Mr Fisk http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-why-do-they-hate-the-west-so-much-we-will-ask-1230046.html

And sure enough on SBS news last night they were interviewing an Israeli Army officer who claimed that Hamas were firing from within the UN school.
