Bail revoked.
The Helen Clark-led assault on our rights scores another victory. I think I'll head out and buy my striped PJs before the rush.

Whatever the aims of those who are being held, and whatever they may or may not be charged with, what we do not need is more legislation.
There is the argument that such acts would be punishable under existing criminal law anyway. But the question is, is the crime of illegal position of a fire arm the same as the illegal possession of a fire-arm for the purpose of influencing the democratic process?
Personally I think they are different offenses and any criminal activity that is intended to pervert the democratic process should be treated more severely. The context of the actions is significant.

The links with green and animal rights groups will come down to a couple of people...
That sounds about right to me. I don't believe that there would be any major linkage, just some individuals who most likely will turn out to have psychological problems.
But I do wish these groups would stop with the New Zealand on the verge of a fascist state bit. The bad people targeted are the ones most likely to do that.

(b) to unduly compel or to force a government or an international organisation to do or abstain from doing any act.
I was wondering what role Suppression Act could possibly play in this so that makes it clear. I thought that bringing in the term "terrorism" sort of clouds things a bit but using force to influence a govt I suppose fits.

Sorry Russell I've got confused - which cause does Bomber have the inside running on?
bomber sounds quite convincing to me. His anguish over what possible harm some people may wind up doing to radical political groups seems heartfelt.
even bomber gets to look moderate sometimes.

And now Bomber is claiming to have some very interesting inside goss.
It's certainly entertaining.

There's no scenario that you could think of where a few dozen sovereignty activists suddenly commit violent acts, shoot someone, and then hundreds more join them in.
There are a number of ways that blokes with guns with grudge can complicate the political process. Tame Iti and co. do have some sympathy. Add to that tit-for-tat responses from extreme right wing groups and there's a volotile mix.
This is small time stuff but it's worth considering what has gone on in other Pacific countries and I do recall quite a few voices on the Left arguing that such things could happen here if Treaty grievances weren't properly dealt with.
Luckily we have succeed in not going down the road of sectarian violence, partly because of the Treaty settlement process Another way that could happen is for small group to cause trouble. Feuds in rural communities can take on a life of their own.

Craig, belabouring any small point will eventually make that point look ridiculous and I feel I'm belabouring what I initially said. Which was, some people whose initial reaction was to attack the police might want to consider what the consequences of Tame Iti's Dad's Army carry on might be.
Large conflagrations start from a few sparks. And I’m thinking about what's happened around our local neighbourhood. That's all a bit unlikely but it is one possible outcome of the police taking no action.

That Dom article also mentions "reports" a particular threat to the PM. Reported by whom exactly? It's a bit frustrating when things are so unclear.
It's understandable that the pols won’t be fronting on this for a while but given that this was all passed by the PM and now there's talk of threats against her at some stage it might help if they do.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that Tame Iti and Planet Earth parted company some time ago. But that's not good enough reason to minimise the potential damage that could result from the sorts of things he's alleged to do.
There's a few of nutters in the white supremist world and I'd be pretty worried if they were setting up military-styled training camps.
