Arnold Schwarzenegger denies using drugs back in the day -- on the basis that marijuana's not drugs, it's a leaf.

That's a great article. I think he's still smoking a bit of leaf based on some of the quotes.

You can hear him saying that though, just like he said "It's not a tumor!" in that kindergarten cop movie. "It's not a drug, it's a leaf!"

Tariana Turia and Sue Bradford are joining my personal idiot list of Maurice Williamson and Roger Kerr.

Where did Sue Bradford come into it? I wasn't aware she'd made any statement on it.

Unless he was staring at your girlfriend's tits so you slapped him in the face.

Yes well. Having lots of money to pay a good lawyer probably helps too ;)

How about ... you can't defend the honour of a non-existent woman, so the PM's recent explanation holds even less water?

Yeah I guess so. Except I thought Sharon was a real person, but just not having an affair with Mallard?

Or why wasn't his response in the house... "Haha Tau. Wrong woman. I got myself a rower!" or something similar. Guess whatever was said about his marriage and his father dying recently got him rarked up.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

There is a difference between action and grandstanding. I have never yet heard of Greenpeace putting their enormous resources to the task of doing something useful like developing renewable energy sources for the third world. Rather, it remains a sort of ecologically-minded Outward Bound to soothe the guilt of the middle classes of the first world.

I'm not sure if anyone working at Greenpeace would agree with the massive resources bit. Given how they scrape together money and how a lot of their work is done with volunteers. Perhaps a better target for your campaign of 'renewable energy for the third world' would be BP or Mobil or something. I hear they turn over a fair bit, and have some expertise in the field of energy.

Personally I think the world is a better place as a result of changes that Greenpeace have pushed. End to nuclear testing in the Pacific, anti-whaling, anti-drift net fishing, anti-illegal logging, climate change awareness. Not just them of course, but they helped.

But if they're not for you, there's probably someone else out there doing something more your style. Why rag on them just because it's not your cup of tea? It's not like they're using your tax dollars or anything.

Personally I don't like soccer. Never enough goals, and a lot of fluffing around passing the ball, too slow for me. But if millions of people around the world want to play, good luck to them.

Er, this is the same Trevor Mallard who baited Don Brash in the House ad nauseum about Don's marital woes???

Somehow I'm trying to find a way for Tau Henare getting the wrong woman to make a difference in this thing, either way. I can't find it though.

Maybe it just makes Mallard a git, and Henare an incompetent git?

There's clearly a gender bias in what constitutes assault.

Well, yes. But I don't think there's a gender bias in the police or in the courts much more than there is in society. I'm sure there's a bunch of social groups around where if you bash a woman you'd be hoping that the police get to you before her brothers/husband/father/friends of either gender get to you. The police will still do you for 'male assaults female' and the courts will come down on you.

I think there's actually perceived power imbalances in what constitutes assault. If I got into a fight with a 13 year old male, you could bet, all other things being equal, I'd be the one the police would be coming down on for not acting my age.

Kyle I was being facetious with "discovery" I thought that was clear.

So when you say "discovery" you mean... colonisation? Something else? Because it would help the discussion of the past few days if you were clear about what your original post meant.

Meanwhile Justice John Wilde in the Wellington High Court has transferred four "terror" case accused's bail appeals to the Auckland registry today citing a lack of resources in Wellington to hear the appeals.

That also seems pretty weird. We're not talking about the Temuka Community Centre here, we're talking about the Wellington High Court. Presumably hearing a whole heap of big serious cases every year. There's some judges and lawyers in Wellington I hear.

Lacks the resources to hear bail appeals? Come again?

Some much awaited wiki wisdom - but still feel free to quote me.

A page that doesn't mention 'New Zealand' or 'discover/y' - I'm not sure how that advances your argument on the reasons for NZ's discovery.

And you still haven't provided an explanation as to how your theory that both countries were "discovered" by England for convict purposes doesn't conflict with the fact that both countries were first "discovered" by non-English Europeans. The Dutch or the Portugese in the case of Australia, and Abel Tasman in the case of NZ
