So, perhaps we should STFU with this thread because, you know, it's kinda demeaning to folks who live under conditions of real state media censorship...
Oh no, I think everyone should rant away.
But as far as I know though, the EFB doesn't restrict free speech. It restricts electoral advertising. That's important, I agree, but it's a much smaller ball game.

I saw the march on the news. Sensible Sentencing, Family First, and Christine Rankin. What the hell happened to my activism? Who are these people and what are they doing with megaphones and placards?
I've lost whether the bill at present is good or not. But I wish people would stop saying it's taking away their freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is the ability to stand up in parliament, a street corner, a park, a house etc, and say what you want. And have the media report it as such. I'm not aware the bill restricts these things in any way.
Money isn't freedom of speech. What they're protesting about is the ability to distribute their 'freedom of speech' and making it available to a wider audience.
It feels a bit demeaning to people who are struggling against regimes that actually do restrict your freedom of speech.

Ah. I was led astray by Robyn. *shifts blame*

But ol' McCroskie is unhappy at the police, who refuse to do the same. Yay, the popo!
Slightly trickier to boycott. I can see it now.
"Mr McCroskie, you're not going to report any assaults or burglaries to us? OK, well, safer policing together is our motto, but if you want."

This video from The Daily Show puts the whole thing in perspective (and it's funnier):
Heh, cameo by Jon Oliver!
I hope they sort it out soon. Sounds to me like the writers have got a fair point, but I'd like the daily show back by early next year at the latest (actually I'd like it back this week at the latest, but that doesn't seem to be working out), so if the bosses could start finding some money in their wallets...

It's called context.
No that's not it. At least not wholly it. I suspect the big knife had something to do with it.
I don't imagine that the person would have any intention of using it at all. Seeing people draw a knife across their own throat however...
I'm just not really the weapons type. I've been on... well over a hundred protests. I can't think of one where I wouldn't have just walked away if people had been carrying weapons.

It's not a question of race, it's a question of statistics.
I suspect (alternatively) they'll fill in the form and it'll get put in the pile of 'Stuff we can't do anything about', along with a heap of burglaries, stolen cars etc.
I don't think most police at front desks care at all about crime stats. If they sat back and thought about 'their bit of the world', they'd probably want to increase crime stats, as the distribution of police resources is partially linked to crime levels in your region. Higher levels of crime relative to other regions, means more cops in your region.
But if you couldn't identify the driver/car, and didn't have a witness, they would indeed shrug their shoulders. It would also be difficult to prove a crime (dangerous driving), rather than just a civil issue (bad driving/inattentiveness etc leading to them hitting your car causing it damage). The police are involved in both, but in the latter I think they just fill in the form and pass it onto the insurance companies to deal to don't they?

Some of it was funny I guess, some was.. cheap. Haha Maori on the dole etc. Meh.
I actually hadn't seen much of the tv coverage of the hikoi. That young man simulating cutting his throat with a machete or something. No doubt it's theatre, but that disturbs me. I couldn't have stuck around at a protest where someone did that.
I never had a problem with the new AB haka doing the simulated throat cutting. I'll have to tie down why the two are so different for me.

Probably very good advice, but in the context of this thread don't you think it was just a wee bit gratuitous and flat out weird?
No I thought it was a non-serious comment. And there's enough crazy serious comments flying around this month to take aim at.
