  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

    Fancy that!

    From Stuff:

SYDNEY: It was billed by then Olympics boss Juan Antonio Samaranch as the best stadium he had seen.

    .......

But a decade after the disastrous float of Stadium Australia Group its banker, ANZ, will take control of the debt-laden stadium for next to nothing. In effect the bank has become a mortgagee in possession.

  • Hard News: Uncapturing Content,

Have a look at North Shore City's Geographical Information System. I don't know if it's still leading-edge, but it was when they launched it.

Perhaps they might be persuaded to permit some of the liberation Tom has in mind?

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

I was just saying to someone in an email this afternoon:

I'm a bit irked that anyone who objects to the thing is damned as a dithering visionless wowser. Generally, I'm up for a punt. But just 14 days to resolve this? Do me a favour.

One useful aspect, though: it's been instructive for us all to get some direct experience of the Mallard style of bullying and intimidation.

Reading the preceding two posts, I feel entirely strengthened in my resolve. This is no way to go about it.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Genius! I can't believe no-one thought to do this before now. What's the one thing Bob 'The Builder' Clarkson is an expert on? Building a stadium, of course. He's done it, and he's done it in a hurry. And what does he reckon this one would cost? Plenty

How much for the Waka version, I wonder?

I might also say that I have read Mr Reid's contribution to the debate and I have emailed to tell him that he is one truly evil man.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Imagine the fun and games that would be going on right now if John Banks was still Mayor of Auckland... Fire, Aim, Ready perhaps?

I see him as more of a Fire, Fire, Fire kind of guy.

All this because of a 12,500 seat shortage at Eden Park?

Indeed. And it is worth bearing in mind the excellent point Brian Rudman made about this last Friday:

Worldwide, there's a growing appreciation that one-off extravaganzas are sometimes best in temporary surrounds.

Here in Auckland, the America's Cup Village was a good example.

It's hardly a new concept. Circuses have been carrying their own tents around for centuries.

Getting back to the rugby, it's not as though we even have to create a whole new temporary stadium.

Eden Park has already said it has a $45 million solution based on the existing ground. Across the harbour at Albany, North Harbour Stadium would undoubtedly be interested in counter-bidding.

  • Hard News: More than a little odd,

We've had a response from John Goulter, so now, typing the information third hand:

Telecom say they've traced the source as far as they can, and can so far confirm that it is coming not from them but from some other assigned provider.

How that squares with Simon's impression that it comes from the main trunk I'm not sure, but I trust they'll be back in touch if they have more.

  • Island Life: Mother, We've Been Goosed,

Seeing we have one link today to David Farrar that he's not wild about, I'll even up the scale with this one that endorses his perspective.

Of the stadium he lists some valid concerns:

*There is no agreement with the sporting codes on whether they would use the stadium
    * There is no agreement with the local authorities
    * There is no agreement with the owners of the land
    * The exact location seems to change by the day
    * There is no owner (such as the Trust in Wgtn) and manager for the stadium!!
    * There is no agreement on who will pay
    * There are no sponsors
    * There are no planning consents

    He also notes:

Thinking back to the Wellington stadium, the proposal was negotiated with key stakeholders over many years. It was a long, tough process, but one which led to a good outcome.

This really irks me also. "Iconic", "legacy" buildings don't tend to be conceived in a panic to meet a ridiculous deadline.

    Full post here.

Oh - and a couple of other things. Why would we suspend the RMA for a footy game, when we won't suspend it to ensure the Auckland power supply?

And this from Paul Henry: are we all happy to stick this thing on top of the site of the Rainbow Warrior bombing?
