    Ace Of Base? WTF?

I Saw The Sign is a song about empowerment, enlightenment, and choosing the better path.

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
    I saw the sign
No ones gonna drag you up
To get into the light where you belong
    But where do you belong?

Next week: I deconstruct the arbitrary nature of the sign.

just a little double entendre/philosophy humour there. ho ho.

i believe in a society in which people who let their strong feelings cloud their judgment are celebrated, and rewarded with positions of influence.

i believe in a society where generations-old grievances are used to justify anachronistic political structures and violent forms of protest.

i believe in a society where aspirations to the equality of peoples is put aside in favour of perpetuating historical political/racial distinctions.

i believe in exaggeraton and soaring, meaningless rhetoric.

hear my dream, people, for lo, it is friday, and i am grumpy.

Meaning Maori will never accept a reduction in whatever they have received thus far under TOW (cue argument that I am being paternalistic, that Maori have 'received' nothing, only got what is rightfully theirs as per the Treaty). Which means if (say) a future National government tries to roll back (clawback?) some of the provisions of what the Treaty has come to mean in modern times then there will be more trouble. Much more. Trouble trouble trouble.

who knows. its even conceivable that malcontent weirdos might run around in the woods with guns, and spouting post-structuralist and revolutionary gibberish. then where would we be.

I thought Pay it Forward was a reference to buying whiteware on credit.

I am all about the habitat but Erin Brockovich looks nothing like Julia Roberts. Honestly if they had screened Nicky Watson in a toolbelt I wouldn't have been the wiser.

  • Hard News: The Finance Campaign,

Nice post Russell. Hopefully the problems with the EFB will be ironed out in select committee.

Given that the Law Society noted that regulating electoral financing is a legitimate constitutional objective, the Herald's shotgun approach seems unlikely to advance public understanding.

I don't see these arrests in especially apocalyptic terms, and I'm reluctant to draw too many conclusions from it. It seems clear that some of those involved were fundamentally misguided and I'm glad they were stopped, but that's about as worked up as I can get. The quotes I saw, if serious, were made by potentially dangerous people who had long since forgotten what is really important in life. I feel a little angry but in mostly sad about that.

I don't necessarily see this case as evidence of a new race relations crisis, or as evidence of a threat to our civil liberties from national security legislation, or as evidence that the activist community is a source of danger, notwithstanding that worthwhile things could (arguably?) be said about these topics independently.

This case shouldn't be about making out or breaking up a pre-existing narrative or worldview, as it appears to be for the usual suspects, no play on words intended.

It doesn't mean that we have to abandon our liberties. It doesn't mean we should just shut up and be thankful that our great and good government is here to protect us from these nasty people.

True. But it's a mistake to align yourself with a bad idea for the purpose of advancing a good one.

This might be a case that shows why we give the state powers of surveillance and arrest. That doesn't mean that civil liberties aren't important or that they don't need protecting from overreach. Why defend the indefensible I say.

if the police hadn't been such fuck ups with arrests and raids, i suspect public sympathy would not be with those arrested.

I don't really get the impression that it is... I think most of the public supports the police action in this case, even if we suspect that the threat posed by this particular lunatic fringe hadn't fully crystallised. Why take avoidable risks with people's lives?

    Well - in the UK...

It may prove easier to deal with each case independently and to assess each on its own merits. It is always difficult to make meaningful and helpful comparisons, and it may just be that both cases are bad in very different ways.

I'm glad that we'll never know whether this sort of homicidal ranting would ever have materialised into actual violence, but those "training camps" must have come close to flipping the "planning" switches of the TSA.

There is a role for all of NZ to assist Maori (not just hapu and iwi) to achieve their goals, but those goals have to be positive goals that are pursued in a positive way.

Ditto that. It can hard to frame actual policies that everyone can agree on, but we all want Maori to succeed.
