Great! Let's kick up Civ IV and see how well it runs!

Good point. I suppose most households care as much about the operating system on their computers as they do about the embedded software in their microwave or video recorder, as long as it works, most of the time. When it doesn't, you call in a "repair man"

Oh yes, totally forgot what I was going to post.
Russell, did you deliberately mean to illustrate a similarity between Brian Tamaki's strategy and Microsoft's?

Ben: I became pretty cynical about the general level of Office/Word expertise amongst the 20+ age group.

I'm glad to tell you I'm in the 50+ age group, there is hope.

Joe: As I need to exchange .doc files with a number of users on a variety of OSes I've minimized the problem by running Word for Office 2007 on Windows XP inside Parallels on my Mac.

    The resulting .docs are near-idiotproof.

So, they can nearly be opened by idiots?

Counts on this topic so far.
    God botherers 25
    Computer geeks 20
And I was starting to think this country was a nation of opensourceanists. ;-)
    Anyroad,

re OpenOffice, just so long as you can explain and people will understand the differences between a .doc and a .odt file I'm sure it will be fine.

The need to understand the difference is almost irrelevant, as long as you save the document as .doc then it can be read and edited on almost any machine, unlike saving in most "new" Microsoft formats.

Hold yer horses there Russ. Bigots come in all colours, shapes and sizes. Scary religious bigots are one thing but techno bigots are, in my opinion, worse. Both rely on ignorance but at least the Brian Tamakis of this world can, at least pretend to, have the soul of this country at heart. The tecno bigot, on the other hand, would sell that very soul to the Devil (Microsoft). I did a little research on Mr Le Sueur, half expecting to find a connection to MS only to find him merely a "Microsoft-pushing school principal"
http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/archives/2007/05/todays_herald_l.html and Auckland Primary Principals Association past president, show us your credentials as a software expert Mr Le Sueur.
I totally concur with you on the abilities of Open Office, I have used it for quite a few years without any problems. On the other hand I am sure I am no alone in finding an astounding lack of compatibility between Microsoft's own products. An example of this, I discovered, was that Movie Maker (a bundled application with windows XP) would constantly crash and that Microsoft was aware of the problem, could I find the required patch on Microsoft's support site? Jeeez, the site isn't even up to date. The sooner Mr. Maharey adopts an open source solution to education the better.

  • OnPoint: Spoonfuls of sugar,

"why wait until you've accrued enough money for something before you get to enjoy the fruits of your labours, when something like this could just be around the corner . . ?"

So, I go out and get my iPod on credit and get hit by a bus. I can listen to my iPod in hospital and ACC pays for the iPod. Or I get 90% of the price of the iPod saved and get hit by a bus and realise there's more to life than an iPod........is that what you mean? ;-)

  • Cracker: LOL,

One point that I think hasn't been mentioned is that when people go to a gig they rarely go alone, so there is an element of social interaction amongst the audience. For instance. A. says to B. and C. "Let's go and see Brendan's show". B. and C. say "who's Brendan?" A. says "He's a really funny guy". This is all purely subjective and based on A's previous experience of seeing Brendan. Brendan tells Joke X, that A. has heard before and found funny. A. hopes B. and C. find it as funny as he did the first time. If they do, then A. feels good, if not then he will feel embarrassed. If Brendan only does new material then A. will be reduced to a blubbering heap of insecurity. So the comedian must use old material for the sake of all of us who suffer from paranoia.

  • Cracker: LOL,

It's not just Brendan It's most of them. it seems. I bought a DVD of Eddie Izzard a while back and every time I watch it it is the same stuff, word for word. I once came across Brendan at the old Chill Bar in Ponsonby and asked him to tell me a joke, he said "naff off, I do this for a living, you'll have to pay me first" hardly new material, I'd heard him say this to some other chap not ten minutes earlier.
