I "get" your joke, but sadly George is a reformed alcoholic and now tee-total. This of course helps partially explain what a chronic, santimonious bore he is. Maybe he's just a teetotaltotalitarian? :)
Maybe he's our age's answer to T.S Green?
T.S. Green? Rings no bells in my belfry. Was he also batty?

As with many laws the intent of the legislator is toward a greater good, as we are always told "you have nothing to worry about unless you are a terrorist/criminal/whatever" but as we all know, laws based on flimsy descriptions and implications become a danger to us all once the goalposts start shifting. I think having to have the go-ahead from the Attorney-General instead of enforcement of the word of law by the police without descresion is a way of society having the best of both worlds without losing sight of the tripartite seperation of powers.
As for the law serving any legitimate or useful purpose, it's always handy to have an ace up your sleeve when things turn to custard.
If you catch my drift. -
would s.123 be used to bring a prosecution for blaspheming a non-christian deity or religion?
From Here
No one shall be prosecuted for an offence against this section without the leave of the Attorney-General, who before giving leave may make such inquiries as he thinks fit.
So, in reality it would take a rather demented Attorney-General to bring such a case............I hope

The tavern is directly across the road from the Herald building and would have offered patrons front-row seats for the commotion.
But I'm surprised that such a dramatic event happened literally on the Herald's doorstep and yet they only reported it with a three-sentence article.
I know both buildings well, in fact if memory serves me well I have been ejected from both. It just seemed too good an opportunity to point out, yet again, the sloppyness of Harollds grasp of reportage.
Many a granny from Waikikamukau will be thinking the Herald is run from a pub in Albert Street........................oh.hang on. -
Yeah, they were always the skankiest b1tches at Uni when I was an Engineering Student trying to concentrate on my studies. The Astrophysicists were by far the worst -- they made the Mathematicians look like Mormons.
I was gonna say Nuns, but all we know how hot they can be.Must be an engineering student, how else could she get that top to work?

Before this thread gets on topic I'm wondering if any of youse saw this in today "Harold"
A police pursuit ended with two people jumping from a stolen car before it crashed into the Herald building in Albert St last night. Patrons at the Shakespeare Tavern watched as the man and woman then fled the scene.
So. The Herald Building is "The Shakespeare Tavern"?
I can see the scene now,
O'Sullivan, from behind a lipstick smeared half empty beer glass "You know what's wrong with this country George?"
George, propping up the bar with a leather patched corduroy elbow "PFFFraaaaarp" -
"New Zealand authorities have been contacted over seven suicides in Bridgend, South Wales, that have been linked to a Bebo website called Suicide Girls."
Methinks they look in the wrong place for the reason. Have you ever been to Bridgend? It looks like it is run by Auckland City Council.
And what's all thisNew Zealand authorities have been contacted
? Who are these authorities, we have a right to know damnit! and who contacted them? I really need to know.

About twenty years ago I was talking about this very subject. Yes twenty years ago I was discussing the next big thing in record retailing and the next big thing was the memory stick (or whatever we called it back then) The system was that you purchased a storage device from the retailer and had tunes loaded onto it for a small fee, you could even buy single tracks off an album, you could keep the tracks if you wanted to or have them "copied over" for a discount on your next purchase. What we didn't take into account was the advent of the personal computer as a media device or the internet as a way of distribution. The feedback I got at the time from record execs was "people will always want the record covers, the added value of sleeve notes and even just the physical object to own." So, nothing got done and we have the situation we have now, they missed the boat.
Had the idea been taken on I can see, in retrospect, that we could have a model whereby you could buy your sounds with your weekly grocery shopping at Foddertown and top up your music on the go at a gas station for a few cents a song, far more convenient than downloading at home and platform swapping for most people.
In this scenario there would have been less incentive for the growth of Napster and its ilk and the Gas station would have more to offer than the brain chilling selection of CDs we have now.
A retail outlet could buy a secure/licenced connection to on-line catalogues and everybody would have been happy.
There you go Record companies, there's your model but I think it maybe too late. -
If only it was sold with a bag of kindling...
Trouble with that is all the hot air gets cancelled out by the frothing of mouths but TV gardeners recommend it as a weed suppressant. ;-)
