Can someone verify this? Even TV3's own story only says:

My Bad, serves me right trying to listen while doing other stuff round the office, I was damned sure they said 1999 rugby, but on relistening to the interview it is indeed the 84 LA Games,

I'm surprised Impey got so fiesty about this. I would have thought 'quiet diplomacy' would have worked better, enabling the Govt to quietly give TV3 an exemption for the RWC without pissing off the Christians. The Govt/nation afterall are keen on 'our national game' being seen free-to-air, so it wouldn't have been a problem. (Can you imagine the Govt saying no? They would have left themselves wide open to the charge of pandering to TVNZ by forcing TV3 to air the matches commercial free)

According to Impey that is exactly what they did do, they went and talked to Maharey, who told them No, ( they also raised that TVNZ got an exemption for the 1999 WRC, still no dice)

  • Hard News: Copyright Amendment Bill latest,

We also recommend rewording section 84(1)(c) to clarify that a time-shifted recording must not be made from an on-demand
    service.

So capturing free content streamed off the TVNZ on demand site is now forbidden. go figure,

  • Hard News: Death Spiral!,

Here's a question: where's the American anguish about their plummeting exchange rate?

In a massively importing economy, shouldn't households be feeling the squeeze? Yet I can't recall reading any commentary of that nature.

With the source of many of their imports rapidly shifting to China which has a peg (albeit slowly crawling) against the US Dollar, they are resonably insulated, the thing that must continue to hurt is rising oil prices and when ever they step out side the US,

I am waiting for the howls to come from those that go across the border to Canada, in the past shops would accept US currency at reduced rate or if they were in a hurry at Par.

I am expecting to hear of Shops asking for more $US than their Canadian listed prices soon, and asking for Loonies rather than greenbacks,

But surely it is NZ's interest rates that are the primary driver for the high currency. The TWI is peaking, there has been 30% appreciation against the Euro and similar rises against most currencies.

If it was just a NZ Dollar story, then yes we could do something about it, but with the Pound, Canadian and Australian Dollars, all at 25-30 yr highs against the US dollars, then it becomes more than just "our problem",

We remain at around 90 against the Aussie, which while high is nowhere near the peak of a few years ago,

One big concern is if the NZ dollar falls significantly we will see rampent rises in Fuel prices, which will flow through to all parts of the economy,

The Reserve Bank needed to jump on the housing market last year, it sat on its hands, and when the big rise in Dairy came through this year, they had no where to hid,

There is alot of ground work being laid, ( reports commissioned, media spots etc), for the Cup to be split, with all the qualifying races being sailed somewhere other than Auckland (Dubai does seem to figure highly in such reports), and the quarter finals of the LV cup and the Amercia's cup being in Auckland,

They mutter things about Global event, interntional audience, we paid for it.....

    re: sampling in the census,

The US try to use sampling in the census as they have a huge problem with undercounting non-WASP-ish populations with traditional methods

Although, as the 10 year census is used to allocate house of Reps seat numbers to each state, it is extremely political so their have been numerous cases in the supreme court agruing that the census bureau must actually count the people one by one, and not use any of that statistical sampling flim flam...

NZ Post's Prezzy card is a way round this, no age limits, just stump up with a wodge'o'cash and they will give you a pre-paid visa to that amount, ( less $5 fee),

Also useful if you are buying things off merchants from less salubrious parts of teh 'net.
