  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

Not wanting to use this as a mac rumour forum, but while we are in the swing of things, this is old but interesting.

    http://www.iphone.org/

Now a carrier independent iphone before xmas would be all I need in my stocking this year. I'm hanging out for one, otherwise I'm having to do the parallel import/trade me thing to get a decent sony w710i walkman phone as vodafone NZ doesn't believe in customer choice.

Actually what is up with music pricing here in NZ, tax?

The last 2 times I have lived in vancouver I came home with a stack of cds as new 'premium' cds cost $17 NZD. (and I got the local gst back when I left the country).

As a result I literally spent a whole day in the Virgin mega store (all 3 floors of it) and ran into Joe Walsh with a stack of cd's too (must be expensive in the US.

Just checked online and they are still around that price. Half of what we pay here.? WTF?

    Anyone, anyone, anyone (Ferris Bueller?)...

If it's the same price as in the stores, I'm still gonna buy the real thing (at least I can on sell it). Still gotta love linea notes etc.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

    Yamis

similar between The Who and Jimi Hendrix, nice little rivalry about who would follow whom on stage.

If you're talking original guitar, bass drums vocals then there is no comparison to the Who. After all they invented the Mashal Stack (well stole enough pieces). John wanted his bass to be louder than Petes guitar, so he built his stack of speakers up, pete copied and the legend began.

Simon, I was refering to their later stage career. Early stones was priceless.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

I've seen U2 twice now, 1984 at CHCH Town Hall and then the zooropa tour, both were stunning.

But don't make me laugh (and I'm not looking for a fight), don't even think of putting the RHCP anywhere near these guys. RHCP are pop pure and simple.

As for real stayers, yeah the Stones have put out some good original material, but on stage they're a parody of themselves, but none can match The Who.

    Check out these

36 years after the original gig. The Uni has an excellent site, with downlaodable concert programme, video interviews and pics.

    and also

    http://www.thewhotour.com/

check out the Squeeze Boz section of this site. It's their live tour diary, concert footage interviews etc.

U2 did some stunning early 80s music, they were an original garage band. Seconds, The Electric Co, Out of Control, Bad, Gloria all good stuff.

They do a stunning version of Out of Control on the Live at Slane DVD (which my brother was at).

I do like it when bands redress old songs and get it right. If you ever get a chance to see the Who Live at the Roayl Albert hall with Eddie Vedder, Paul Weller etc, they do a stunning revisit of The Kids Are Alright and So Sad About Us.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

Warning, ramblings of an angry young man follows.

Watching the empassioned speeches from the likes of Tessa Duder, Keith Locke and all the others bemoaning the death of NZ's connection to the water, what do I bloody do but open the Sunday Satr Times to page C13 and there in all it's blazen glory is Mighty Marsden Cove Marina opening 9 dec.

Hang on one bloody minute here. From Hoopers (developers) web site.

Marsden Cove is a canal housing and marina project located on the pristine shoreline of the Whangarei harbour.

I thought the whole debate was about too much money, blah blah blah and the connection to the water that we Kiwis are loosing, bringing dear old Tessa to tears (my arse).

We were told by the luddites that this was the wrong building in the wrong place, that the artists impressions showed the evil ugly side of development, no connection to the water etc.

So how are we to feel then Ms Duder about these two images.

One an imposing non connecting blight on the water.

    (stadium NZ)
    http://www.warrenandmahoney.com/StadiumNZ_images/SNZ-Sketch-Captain-Cook-Wharf.jpg

And this for those who want a more urban lifestyle 1.8hrs from Auckland (well stay in the bloody city then)

    http://www.coastalnz.co.nz/marsdencove/artists_impression.htm

Maybe its because having a dose of thhe Sex Pistols in Filth and the Fury coupled with the fact that John Key is now this great white young hope for NZ (if anyone makes Tony Blair comparisons I might vomit), but some people (including the bloody media) need a bullet.

But wait folks theres more. Go to the Hoopers web site and we'll see that there are 6 waterfront developments going on. Each one a monument to NZ's connection to the waterway.

How will dear ole tessa explain this one to the kids, she better have plenty of hankies.

In a voice choked with emotion, she said she would have great difficulty taking her grandchildren to North Head or Mt Eden and trying to explain the object marring their view.

"I will have difficulty holding back my tears."

Sure just around the corner is the beautiful Marsden Point oil refinery, but that's hardly the point is it. But last time I was at Cooks Beach, I do remember a relatively quiet underdeveloped area, big flat beach.

The Whitianga waterway development, was a boggy flat coastal undeveloped back lot of whitianga. Nice, as the coromandel should be.

I guess Tessa doesn't get down to Whitianga too often. Last time I was there I took a turn up the forestry road to look over the area, stunning but soon to have its slice of authentic urban waterfront development.

What a pathetic hypocritical lot we are in this country. Like Cr Robyn Hughes of the ARC in her most dignified manner telling central govt and wgtn where to go. Hmm will Cr Hughes be part of the delegation going to wgtn cloth cap in hand asking for $175million so as the ratepayers won't vote their sorry arses out next time.

    Sorry but what a joke.

Put in temporary seats, skimp as bloody much as possible and revert to 1/3rd full Blues and Auckland rugby audiences after RWC2011, and lets find something we can sink our teeth into and be proud of.

Shall we start a list of who to send to quarantine island.

Man there's a generational shift in tv viewing.

In my day (I guess I'm old enough to say that) Frank flash was a pretender to the crown that had been so admirably filled by Count Homogenized.

I was going to say thank go nobody mentioned Metal Mickey, but it tourns out a good friend liked Metal Mickey. Mind you she did have a wine under her belt, the things we say eh.

It's like owing up to liking Allo Allo

Really interesting listening to Richard Griffin and Chris Trotter talking on the panel today.

All the stuff about hidden agenda was just very spooky.

    What a creep.

How bad is that lot if I say Katherine Rich is starting to look like an angel compared to that lot, funny thing perspective eh.

Seriously how many times did I listen to bad jelly the witch and sparky and the talking train.

Seems to have rolled over to adulthood, I am now an avid listener to all manner of auudio rips of british shows. They are stunningly easy to listen to, something about the theatrical scripting that they transfer to auudio easy.

    Black Adder,
    Fawlty Towers
    Reggie Perrin
    Robins Nest
    Man About the House
    George and Mildred
    The Good life
    The the Manor Born
    Dads Army
    Yes Minister
    Yes Priminister
    Porridge
    Rising Damp

And so many more that actually were made for radio like the goons.

Not too many US shows transfer to audiol.

Seinfeld really helps if you've seen it.
MASH a little to visual but not bad.
The Bob Newhart Show works a treat

Ok off track but have any of you come across www.otrcat.org

The stunning amount of old radio shows that are available online and on very very cheap cds.

I have got the complete Phill Harris and Alice Faye show from the 40s-50 and they are side splittingly funny.

    http://www.otrcat.com/philharrisalicefaye.htm

many of the shows have a free download, this is a funny one.

    Sorry way off track.

How was it my mum let me watch Survivors. Stunning show
    http://www.survivorstvseries.com/

I'll vote for fraggle rock and the muppets any day.

Anyone any luck with the The Glumps, little animated plasticine blobs.

    episodes like...
    "the glumps discover fire"
    "the glumps invent the motorcar"
"the glumps learn how to fly"
