  • Hard News: Some sort of pun on "Groove"…,

Chris Bourke didn't edit Real Groove though he did write for it (and edited Rip It Up). I'm looking forward to the launch of his Blue Smoke book in Wellington tonight.

I co-edited Real Groove with Nick in the mid-90s (he wrangled most of the words and writers; I helped write, and subbed, scanned pix, designed and composited editorial and ads - on a Mac Quadra, those were the days), before Real Groovy boss Chris Hart decided that if we wouldn't move to Auckland we had to go, and Russell Baillie took over. :(

Agree about John Russell. And that Joe Nunweek is talent. He's on the money; the only music mag I regularly read in print now is The Word.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

went back to the scheduled Saturday Morning With Kim Hill at about 10.30, didn't it? I know Mark Cubey, Kim's producer, was making good use of the internet and Twitter in particular while they were doing their coverage, and they did brilliantly -- but they were also sitting in a studio next to a fully operational newsroom in Wellington taking reports over the phone. It's a different medium.

Radio New Zealand went back to "regular" programming around 10.10, actually, after an extended news bulletin. Felt a bit weird; IMHO we should have kept going with the uh, rolling news. But I don't run News (if I did, just before Sport, we'd have a new section, "And now, Crime").

The newsroom was a lot busier than most Saturdays, for sure. I just took a backseat, covering texts, emails, Twitter, Facebook and feeding any prospects to the news team.

Best text was the one asking if weddings and other functions were still happening.

  • Hard News: That Summer!,

Ah, That Summer! What a lovely compilation from those new wave days of yore. And yes, crummy ol' summer down here in Wgtn, but the last few days have been superb, and with Festival, cricket, Phoenix, beerfest and the usual capital throb it's just been terrific. Which makes me think: time to get out in the sun and check out what the Mannequins are doing today.

  • Field Theory: Wellington, after dark,

ah, you should have gone last night. Not so full, not too hot, fewer hardcore fans, but SO many converts... everyone was just totally there by the encore, for which they really pulled out the stops: John Saw That Number, Buckets of Rain (Dylan), Train from Kansas City (Shangri-Las).... They really had a ball and Kelly Hogan was magnificent. Best onstage banter I've seen for a very long time.

Weird though, to find out just beforehand that two guys were punching it out in the Al Green audience during the Opensouls support set. WTF?

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

In response to Giovanni's question: the event with Richard Gage at Te Papa was arranged before I was approached about an interview.

As for the interview, I should probably have declined to go to the 9/11 well again, after the interview with David Ray Grifffin in August 2008. Gage looked interesting, but I hadn't done enough work on sussing out his detractors (check out this forum for instance). It's like creation/evolution - stirs up a hornet's nest and nobody wins.

(I also let Kim down with the Rod Carr interview earlier on Saturday - hadn't realised the extent of the controversy in Christchurch about the University and the music school.)

So, mea culpa. Mistakes. That's how we learn, apparently.

OK, back to finishing off replies to the 200+ emails from listeners... the best ones are from first-time haters in America and Australia who now think that Kim is the female Bill O'Reilly.

Oh, and Peter Griffin has a report on Richard Gage at Te Papa, to go with Giovanni's one.

  • Hard News: Rodney on the Road,

Both. Rodney was described by someone as looking like an orange raisin. They were on the pavement, so probably nothing going on the F&S front.

He was striding along the Oriental Bay promenade on Sunday with his blonde companion, looking confident and tanned.
