I'll concede that Toll has arguably done us taxpayers like a dinner here. But I think it was going to keep on doing that no matter what sweetheart deal it got.

I think we should have sent in the men in jackboots and berets. The final solution to corporates screwing us over - nationalise!

  • Indiana Jonesing,

It is the same thing. For anyting stupid you can bring up about the Clinton campaign I can match it with something from Obama's.

Clinton clearly had never slugged back a couple of shots and then gone shooting 'coons off the back her truck in her life, yet that's the impression she seemed to be pushing in PA. I've seen shots of Obama bowling, which he wasn't good at but, but had clearly done it before. I saw footage of him playing basketball last night and he sunk a long jump shot no problem.

She's giving me a strong impression that she'll pretend to be anything depending on what group of people/state she's standing in front of that week. Which yes, is politics, but if it looks fake, people aren't going to like it, they're going to think she's just lying about who she is to get their vote. She looks fake to me.

That'll be Walsh. Fran Wilde is the one who freed teh gays.

Duh. Switch brain on before demonstrating fanboy knowledge.

And while I'd definitely frak Viggo with the lights on, I don't know how many more vaseline-caked shots of Liv Tyler looking vaguely confused I can handle.

They've resigned Andy Serkis for gollum, and Ian for Gandalf. No mention was made of Aragorn. No mention has been made that I've seen of Viggo. Aragorn's role pre-LOTR is pretty minor, and since he finished up the big hero king in LOTR, they'd struggle to now put him in an ordinary bloke part. I'm picking he won't be in it.

I can't imagine they'll write Arwen back into it. Liv Tyler was a absolute disaster in filming, they rewrote helms deep to take her out of it (they had to digitally remove her from various shots, she was originally pulling Aragorn up on that rope), and there was a screening of bloopers for movie insiders at Jackson's studio which largely consisted of her being very 'blonde' while riding on the fake barrel horse.

Agreed about Saruman - but didn't teh necromancer episode occur before the events in the Hobbit?

Same year. 2941 the White Council drove Sauron out of Dol Guldor.

And could Charlie Ross please offer his services to Peter Jackson? I've fond memories ofThe Hobbit, but I'm seeing how its going to fill two features -- especially if they're bloated out to the usual Jackson length.

Hobbit will be film 1. Film 2 will be entirely between the end of the hobbit and beginning of fellowship. How they're going to hollywood that sufficiently, I don't know, but the new director has been in talks with Jackson and Wilde about it and all three are in agreement there's a good movie there.

(don't hold your breath for a version of the prequel trilogy, because really, what was that about?)

I've watched Clones about three times now - it was on TV a while ago and I videoed it for my son who is a star wars fan.

Every time I watch it, by the next day I have basically no memory of it. It's the movie of so little point as to be instantly forgettable.

NZ$500 for the iphone too. that's relatively cheap

The stuff story isn't an indication of what it will cost in NZ, just an indication of how much it costs in the states, in NZ dollars.

perhaps visual art works differently with drugs but its pretty well documented the effect it has on the creativity and productivity of ones career. There are exceptions, but not many.

The counterpoint is the list of artists of various sorts who have had their talented careers cut short through drug overdoses. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison (possibly), Janis Joplin. Elvis's death was possibly complicated by his addiction to pills. etc etc. Kurt Cobain shot himself, but I'm guessing his use of drugs didn't help his state of mind.

Direct use of solar thermal has possibilites, but is reliant on good design and getting the kit installed at the right time.

Are there any requirements to install solar water heating when building new houses? That would seem to make a great deal of sense, as that's when it is cheapest to do.

  • Speaker: Apathy is where the heart is,

Club football will be eroded further.

I'm starting to develop the belief that this isn't true. Or at least, not necessarily true. I think people should actually say "Club football will be changed forever".

If people want to watch club football, good on them. But they're not the top level, or the next level down, so they're not going to get crowds in the thousands - few hundred around the sideline should be a good crowd for most games.

And financially they should be getting the flowdown from the top level. Clubs should be getting money from NPC teams, and if NPC owns the super 14, a strong financial super 14 franchise should see money coming down to them for their jerseys and bus hire and equipment and so forth.

And if the all blacks are worth umpteen million, and bring in X money by playing a big international, but can only play... say 30 games a year. Why would you have them playing club rugby? If they play no club rugby, but more games internationally as all blacks, rugby in nz will be in a better financial position. There's no financial value in having dan carter running around with his club team. Unless there's value in it for Dan Carter (eg, recovering from injury, fitness, game time etc) why would you do it?

And I don't follow club rugby at all, but by logic I would say that professionalism has made club rugby stronger in NZ. Professionalism has made rugby players much fitter, generally more skilled, and has improved their ability to play as a team. In order to break into that, amateur players playing at the club level need to be better. Yes there are less players and less teams now but that's not affecting the quality of our rugby at the end result. It's been 13 years since professionalism, which is a over a generation in sporting terms, and we're still the best rugby nation in the world.

I think club rugby needs to be thought of differently. It's the training ground for players going up, or those on the fringe of provincial. It's age grade rugby for younger players. It's social rugby for the less skilled. I fail to see why any of this requires All Blacks out on the field.

And I'd probably say the same thing, which is why folks should be profoundly thankful the chances of either of us getting our hands on a ministerial warrant are non-existent.

I think we should share one Craig. We could split the week - you'd do right wing stuff monday to wednesday, I'd do left wing thursday to sunday. Every department we ran would be in a permanent state of chaos by week 2.
