  • Hard News: Track to the Future,

The last TGV line built cost EUR4bln for 400km. So maybe NZD12bln for the Auckland/Wellington line.

There are 9mln domestic air trips a year. So the $700mln annual interest on an Auckland/Welly TGV could be funded by an $80 levy on each flight / rail trip.

I think the god bit is voluntary in France - one can just have the civil ceremony.

  • Hard News: Track to the Future,

..Auckland City Council seem to be trying to stop any progress on getting more Aucklanders using rail for commuting.

Somebody stuffed up, clearly, in not designating that rail corridor in time. Mind you, with all the schemes, some barking mad, suggested in Auckland, you could probably block any development for years: <i>"sorry, you can't build a new garage, Birkenhead is designated as the site for New Zealand Disneyland"</i>.

It is possible to build underground railways under tower blocks, BTW, if you design around them. The World Trade Center had the PATH under it.

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

I would estimate around 40% NZ music content and local bands live on breakfast with havoc.

I miss listening to the B in the mornings (as opposed to at work on the net). Active breakfast is ok, but it ain't the same as the mighty Havo.

Also, they provide free drug education. Listening to some of the munters who call in reminds you why you shouldn't do too much drugs.

"Can I have yer prize, bro?"
"What prize are you calling in for?"
    "The prize, like"
    "Which is?"
    "Dunno"
"Ok, you win three free organic coffee enemas and a Yulia album"

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

I was being a bit flip, anyway. But when I hear NZ Music Month I do tend to think of wall-wall Shihad, Dave Dobbyn and maybe Scribe.

For all I know Steve Hill "has" had some sort of NZ music support. With those sort of numbers though, he maybe doesn't need it..

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

Dave: If you go to Wellington's hard dance parties we might have met. I tend to wear lots of shiny stuff and hang out with the WDC people.

I must get that album, maybe. Is it available in unmixed?

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

My fave NZ musician is Steve Hill but I bet they won't play any of his stuff in NZ music month.

Do you have to still live here to be an "NZ musician"? Or does your music have to be in a supported genre - downbeat, dub, indy, maybe psytrance but definitely *not* hard trance?

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

Regarding that article about the alleged $1bln+ cost of drugs, most of the costs identified were those of drug *prohibition*. So if drugs were legalised, we'd be a billion dollars better off as a nation.

  • OnPoint: Relationship Status: It's complicated,

Its a little like the time I was trapped in my flat for a good half hour because my skanky neigbour was having intimate relations against my front door

You don't *have* to live in Christchurch..

I think the Chinese government has a very poor understanding of public relations.

...I think the state has to recognize that the Chinese Communist Party is never going to be wildly popular in the west and try to keep as low a profile as possible.

They should probably start by changing the word "Communist" to something more west-friendly. Calling it the Chinese Capitalist Party would keep the initials the same and save on stationary, in important cost in any rebranding exercise. Or do they keep calling it that for domestic consumption?

Incidentally, on the subject of national PR, is anyone following Doonesbury?
