  • Hard News: The Wall and the Paper,

Thanks Nick - you reminded me of one good reason to keep my subscription - Rod Oram's column - that man should be advising govt

  • Hard News: The Wall and the Paper,

What on earth are the SST doing ditching Finlay Macdonald’s intelligent column, turfing the eloquent Steve Braunias while elevating Michael Laws?
The format changes are kind of interesting, so many inserts, including inserts inside inserts – it was like one of those Russian Dolls, vaguely reminiscent of pass the parcel, all rather fun on a Sunday morning. When I finally got to the last doll / parcel and found no Finlay McDonald, no Braunias and no majorly inspiring content to offset this loss ( I never read the Laws pieces – I don't do despair on a Sunday). I went out to my garden – tossing the paper in the compost on my way. What a shame.

  • The end of the road West,

I'd be ok with anyone else kicking the bucket, but please, not Munter.

Munter should have his own series

I would really like to see Jethro take a fall tonight

Me too, what a complete asshole he's become.

Now munter - he's my man ( along with Judd) his unexpected rifs off into philosophy are wonderful

  • The end of the road West,

I'm picking a reasonably optimistic ending which would be out of character for the writers but I sense the writers have developed a certain affection for these characters and may not want to kill/maim them off.
Then again Hamlet didn't end well.

I agree Loretta has developed some interesting complexities over time.

Taking this a step further why not make every home a liquor outlet.

I mean even walking/driving to my local liquor outlet runs the risk of a bit of biffo or anti social behavior.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

My fault for not going to university, I guess.

I'm with you Russell, I didn't finished anything at University but did drive the rubbish truck at Auckland Uni for 4 years - learned a lot from that - the rubbish was 80% paper , 20% dead rats ( from the psych labs) , I learned a University needs a lot of rats.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

as Edison might have said, our unions discovered something important - how NOT to negotiate. If this forces them to sharpen up, and stop relying on tired rhetoric in their battle for worker conditions, to do the diligence, to understand the issues, to seek wide support, etc, then that's been a very valuable lesson for them.

I agree, their naivety was embarrassing, a shambles that turned into a cluster fuck. I hope Equity is having a really good look at itself, its leadership and its associations with our Aussy cousins. They seriously need a better script writer.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Many thanks Russell for trying to shovel a glimpse into this wee mess.
My actor friends are very passionate about this but I sense they are not getting the whole story and their union is letting them down in that.
I suspect there could be some politicking from the studios as well.
A lot of heat on both sides - I have been involved in union disputes like this in the old days, hard stands being made by both sides and everyone losing in the end.
What is to be done to solve this sorry affair?
