I do have some good experiences:

I was once off to Switzerland on a winter weekend in London, flying out of City Airport. The IRA had blown up a building in Canary Wharf the week before, so people were a bit jumpy. I got in a cab at around 5:30 for a 7pm flight and was then stuck in traffic is half the roads around the wharf were closed off. Made it to the airport at around 7:05 and was all set to get a cab home and make it to the slopes by Saturday afternoon, if at all.

The checkin people rang the gate: "the doors aren't shut yet, it's worth a go". One of them grabbed one of my ski bags, I took the other and we more or less ran through security and down to the gate. I got my skip trip in with moments to spare. I wrote a nice letter to the airline when I got home.

Swissair. Went bust a few years later, so obviously customer service doesn't count for much.

  • Hard News: Need to Know,

There would have been a by-election. Clarkson is an electorate candidate, he'd have lost his electorate seat. National would be one person down while waiting for the by-election, and would have stayed one-person if they'd lost the by-election.

So basically, the list/electorate balance is never revisited after the election?

Which means also that if a party (as might have happened) misses threshold and has no MPs, then one of their members gets elected at a byelection somehow, they only get the electorate MP, not the list ones.

I've often thought of making an iPhone or similar app that does a rolling recording of everything said in your space over a 24 hour or so period.

Do you think it would be immoral to have such a thing? What do you think people's reactions would be if you pulled out such recordings?

invented trotting clubs (who do not own race courses) that use the money as prizes on stake races to move the cash on to livestock owning club members.

Like a sort of farm-team version of BAE-gate.

  • Hard News: Need to Know,

I don't quite see why Glenn would want a Maori/Labour coalition. Since they had the support from NZ First (and National had zero chance of putting anything together), all it would do is make a Labour/Green/Maori government possible, which I doubt Glenn would be keen on?

Unless he likes giving money to random politicians to gain influence.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

"apologising" to those Asians "who are not engaged in criminal activity"

Maybe I should apologise to those ACT MPs that are not engaged in criminal activity? (In the Parliament Coddington was an MP in, that was 11%, or about 12 times the rate of criminality amongst Asian New Zealanders).

First, Rich, nobody is stopping you talking about whatever the hell you want. (And anyone around here who tried to "thread Mom" or direct discussion tends to get told to naff off, so I'm not stopping you.)

In that case lets talk about flying cars :-)

I'm not so much talking about this site as the general sense of the media that what's important about the election is not what the parties plan to *do* for the next three years, but whether X's new hairstyle is going to go down well with Y demographic. Of course for the US elections, that's stuff amounts to 100%).

Treating politics as cricket, in other words. It is slightly more important than that.
