  • Hard News: Irony Deficient,

I suppose the NZ comedy scene is in good health when Cal Wilson is turning up on QI

On BBC Radio 4 Friday night quiz show as well. Though they called her an Australian.

As the Internet is based around communities of interest, satire may have a more natural home there.

I wonder if the internet is a way to get into TV shows these days. You can imagine someone running a youtube channel, building a twitter/facebook community, weekly 10 minute show, starting to get referenced by other shows on TV, etc. If you can go to a TV network and say 1. we're funny, and 2. X thousand people watch us every week that might start to break some ground (Damian's points about smart local content having to push uphill against international dross noted).

  • Hard News: Media3: Standards Showdown,

One thing that didn’t make the cut of the discussion in last week’s show was my question about why no one has ever bothered to seek *those* results by OIA.

That would seem to be information that actually could be potentially useful if made available in the right way.

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom: We need an Inquiry!,

Without public pressure, the police will just sweep this under the rug. Dr Norman is totally correct to keep this in the public eye.

Based on what? This is a high profile investigation which the police have begun. If we go back a couple of months and look at their last high profile investigation in the political sphere, John Banks, there the police did a pretty good job, informed the public of the results, and released materials which further embarassed Banks. Not much left under the rug.

Even if they weren't being professional, there'd be plenty of people in the police who'd hate the fact that the GCSB can do shit and not be accountable for it, unlike the police who can be dragged over the coals when they screw up. A few cops will be loving the light being shone into GCSB processes and screw ups.

  • Hard News: Media3: Standards Showdown,

I read that story this morning and listening to John Hartevelt on the mediawatch podcast on the way to work.

It really is looking like a system designed badly enough to be an argument for national standards testing. Oh the reason this data is no good is because it's based on individual teacher assessments so it's not very useful. We should have a national test that all children sit each year...

  • Legal Beagle: Dotcom spying: Crown…,

For our Crown Organisation the liability apparently rests with the CEO. It’s the reason I don’t mind his salary being so high.

Not personally liable. CEOs of Crown Organisations get sued all the time - every time a prisoner contests a decision of Corrections it's "Bloggs v CEO of Department of Corrections". But the CEO wouldn't be in court for any of them, and if they win, the CEO is only carrying the can politically.

  • Legal Beagle: Dotcom spying: Crown…,

This morning’s New Zealand Herald has an article on this in which I am quoted about the likelihood of charges.

This statement attributed to Meurant really is dripping with irony, given his role with the Red Squad.

However, that would not happen, he said. A long-standing police culture of avoiding court scrutiny over serious matters had now become entrenched in other agencies, including the GCSB.

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom vs. The Teapot Tapes,

His successor Peter Fraser was born in Scotland. The most recent foreign-born PM was the Englishman Walter Nash.

Well that was some awful wikipedia reading on my part :(

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom vs. The Teapot Tapes,

(ps. can Kim Dotcom become Prime Minister? Or do we have a have to be born here criteria?)

Most recent PM born outside of NZ was Michael Joseph Savage, who was born in Australia (moved here when he was about 35). Probably predates the rule of citizenship?

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom: Questions and Answers,

That’s a relief, because he frankly came across like a tired old fool on TV3 News last night.

That was a concerning image wasn't it?

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom: Questions and Answers,

That’s the NZSIS you’re thinking of, where it is illegal to name staff publicly other than the Director. No such requirement for anonymity applies to the GCSB.

They do try and keep their identity secret however. Hager was able to identify them by looking... can't remember if it was an electoral roll or some sort phone book where they were all listed in a particular way.

Cockup is far more likely than deep, dark conspiracy.

    Aye.
