Cyclists in lycra
I reckon that given enough time I could prove that between making the Lycra from hydrocarbons and washing it to ensure that it isn't unacceptably smelly, Lycra clad cyclists emit more carbon per km than a 50cc scooter.

Wouldn't happen in Welly.
We just get a street person trying to hold up the KFC with nunchaku, then the emo kids pile in and it fully kicks off...

Perhaps some of us Wellington-based PA regulars could organise a less formal get-together?
I'd be in.

Also, I believe that one day there will be a (possibly reggae) gig called "Rockfree Smokequest".

I think they should get some celebrity model to do an ad with the slogan:
don't smoke / stick to the coke -
all Aussie cops are armed, all the time (even off-duty)
Isn't that rather awkward when they're playing rugby, or having intergenerational sex, or whatever other leisure activities the Australian boys in blue enjoy?

Yay, have we found a columnist from the land of UK?
And either the ex-MP for Wellington Central, or a Radio One DJ.

Just out of interest, what ads are out there with a clear focus on females with regard to behaviour or thought process?
Those "stick with the girls" ones (which may be from a Wellington local body).
I regard them as unbelievably patronising. Adults of either sex should be able to go out solo in our cities if they feel like it. And make choices about who they interact with socially.

I think the Ralston article just showed what an unreconstructed Neanderthal wingnuts he is. I get the impression that that's about standard for NZ broadcast and print media, though.
Though I guess he kept his gob shut while working for a state broadcaster under Labour.
In some countries, journalism attracts people with progressive attitudes. Why not here?

By 1987 the whole romantic kibbutzim sctick was a distant memory.
I know Israeli people who still try to keep that particular ideal alive. Interestingly they opposed the occupations and the general belligerence of Likud, whilst at the same time voluntarily doing military service (their residence outside Israel meant they didn't have to).
