All uses of "ontological" are either brave or foolish.

I think people can be brave and foolish simultaneously (not in the sense that they are multitasking either).

May I be so bold as to suggest Reginald Perrin as someone who might translate David's post into English?

But surely these costs apply with almost any disease?

Yep and as you infer, they're everywhere.

(vacuous look returns to my face which strangely enough looking in the direction of Dunedin).

  • Hard News: 5.30 Follies,

Craig the organisation that conducted the survey didn't look flakey, infact quite legit ...my interpretation of the results is another thing entirely....but nonetheless I found it kinda amusing........that's just what lept out to me.

Time to rest my weary head after a cracking night of SJD at the Kings Arms!

Interesting thread when people aren't engaging in personal attacks (or speaking in tongues).

Playing the ball (i.e. addressing the argument) and not the man (i.e. avoiding ad hominem abuse/insults) should be encouraged.

Respect to those who make their point plainly without the need to patronize, insult or retaliate to provocation (real, imagined or otherwise)!

James seemed to put forward a reasoned and logical position, but Ron seems to counter these (when not having a swipe at James) in a way that shares those attributes....Hmmm perhaps Ruth Laugesen could continue her good work and clarify?

What other savings and what other things are there?

Non-market savings. Soft costs that are often difficult to calculate (& thus I'd assume are ommitted for the sake of pragmatism). The cost of having a family go through the strain of dealing with the disease, perhaps the loss of having a breadwinner out of action, the opportunity cost in having those hospital resources deal with this patient rather than another patient(s). I’m guessing here though as I really have no idea what is included or excluded when the analysts determine what they think the costs/savings are.

Here's something for statisticians out there being the results of a survey on morality.

Interestingly for me that when the data is sliced and diced,(& generalising wildly) being in any of the following demographic groups tend to exhibit similar outcomes in decision making when it comes to answering this survey about morality.

    65+ years old
The lowest income category for the survey
    Not educated beyond high school
    Religous
    Conservative
    Republican
    From the southern states

Perhaps after the "best party" thread we could have one about best obsessive-compulsive disorder?...perhaps putting this sort of stuff behind a paywall might avoid frightening newbies away ;o)

As I point of clarification (for anyone studying or intending to study Haywood's work for NCEA).

    Is the underlying theme?

    A) Bollard cares not about the amount of pain he inflicts as long as improves the bottom line.
    B) Trying to chop more than a finger of Charlie at a time is a bad thing.
    C) Bloody christians.
    D) All of the above
    E) None of the above

The Independent has a couple of articles about the UK's equivalent of the DPB and getting people off benefits and back into employment.

I thought the parallels with godzone were interesting (as probably are the differences).

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

Am not sure that creating a premium ad-free PA experience would be worth the time/money/effort. When considering alternatives such as putting the content (&/or conversations) behind a paywall, I think would unduely cut down the audience and the number of participants.

I barely notice the advertising, which indicates that I'm not engaged by it. Perhaps this is validation of Russell's comments about the lack of fit of agency creative and desire to contibute in-house to the creative process for PA's advertisers à la bFM styles....tho perhaps translating the je ne se qua of bFM's radio ad's to the net may be quite challenging (particularly without pop-ups).

I know other (non media) industries are skeptical about the reliance on advertsing revenue....but in the absence of alternatives, or rather should that be "with the proliferation of low/no cost alternatives", I think the advertsing is a business model that can work.
