The only TV journalist covering the story without disgracing them self was Lisa Owen - everybody else was clearly high on adrenaline and unable to hide their glee at breaking such a 'great' story. A symptom of the fact that too many of our TV journalists are young, (cheap) and hired largely on the basis that they look good on camera.
Almost everyone I've talked to about this story has mentioned O'Connor and his grossly inappropriate comments. It's ironic that - for once - the police PR has been flawless - but all that good work has been spoiled by Greg O'Connor ranting like a maniac at every opportunity.

BTW, Ralston name-checks you in his latest Listener column. The context is a bit unclear - something about a touch rugby game?

six times as many men in New Zealand are apprehended for family violence offences as women . . .
Doubtless due to the political correctness of our brainwashed lesbian police force. Wake up man!

The Herald's editorial voice is often like this -- it gets trappped in its own arguments.
I'm told most of the editorials are written by Roughan.
-
Russell, I don't think you're the only person in New Zealand that actually reads the Herald's editorials but I'd guess the actual number is somewhere in the very low triple digits.

It's going to make managing retirement villages an unhappy task if a quarter or more of the residents have net eggs in danger.
New Zealander's have lost about 1.5 billion dollars to the finance companies in the last year. It represents a fairly large chunk of the retirement savings of middle income New Zealand.
People like Bruce Shepherd have been railing against the stupidity of these investors, which is a little harsh. I think people assumed that there were laws in place that protected them from simply having their money stolen from them by their financial agents. People should have been more prudent, but Hanover was a respected company before Hotchin and Watson took over, and they were very clever about targeting retirement communities and the elderly demographic in general, using Richard Long and their gardening packages full of flower bulbs to sell the brand.
Both of the major political parties have been pretty quiet about this, National because it represents a spectacular failure of the free market, Labour because it happened under their watch.

No. Under National, only the rich get pie. This is what they call "an incentive" (though what for is unclear).
I don't know if they do. Based on my income I'm technically 'rich' (in reality I'm as middle class as it gets) and most - if not all - of what I gain in the tax cuts I lose in KiwiSaver reductions and tax changes to my employer contribution.
I guess rich people who don't have KiwiSaver will make out, I just doubt there are very many of them. This seems less like a tax cut and more like an accounting scam.
Regarding the urgency motion, it seems as if the Nats have confused cause and effect; they've decided to take advantage of their media honeymoon to do something controversial and unpopular without figuring out that their honeymoon was only going to last until they, well, did unpopular controversial stuff.
Those PAS readers who think the Herald are in the tank for National might also want to cast their eyes over Audrey Young's blog.

It's not as if the business media are likely to start telling investors what scumbags these guys are any time soon.
I haven't been reading the NBR, but the business writers in the Herald and Dom-Post have been intensely critical of Hanover.

Fuck you're awesome, Danyl.
Why, thanks Ben. You might be surprised by how rarely I hear that.

I guess we can't expect the journos to stop their collective John Key handjob and return to their keyboards to write much about this.
(Sigh) Journalists HAVE written about this. That's how you know about it. It's not up to journalists to critique the government - that's the role of the opposition. Journalists are then meant to report both the government and opposition viewpoints and if you read the story I've linked to you'll see that's exactly what's happened.
