If I were to organise some kind of get-together* for the PAS readers in Wellington on the Saturday of the India/NZ test match, how many people would want to show up?

Can't get there from here, without significantly more funds and planning than is possible :(. Otherwise I'd be keen.

I tend to think ODIs are still an abomination.

They are too short to develop the strategy and complexity that is test cricket.

They are too long to fit in an evening and too long to avoid 4 hours of boring forgone conclusion when one side stuffs up.

Over the years the rules for ODIs have improved and the game is more interesting and more often exciting.

But as far as I can see 20/20 does everything that ODIs do without the minuses.

A time where we play only tests and 20/20s seems pretty good to me.

We may just have to face it that ODIs are dog tucker.

    Oh dear.
    What a pity.
    Never mind.

Yeah I like Guptill too. I just haven't seen enough of him to know.

He does move well in the field. And he does seem to be able to alter his batting depending on the situation. It will be interesting to see how he copes with the Ausies the second time he faces them (they have an ability to work batsmen out).

All in all signs of finesse

So Hadyn having experienced and enjoyed 20/20 do you think you could enjoy ODIs or even Test matches?

By your measure I imagine a test match might require serious medical treatment if you really did enjoy it.

I'm curious because I'm not sure how the balance of cricket will shake out over the next couple of years.

It's clear 20/20s are very profitable.

But do they increase the number of people wanting to go to ODIs? Or alternatively do they replace ODIs.

Test cricket will survive simply because it's an utterly different game and experience.

But is there an audience for both 20/20 and ODIs?

  • Field Theory: Cricket isn't Rock,

Ok definition of finesse is different.

For me finesse players get ones and twos because they place the ball in gaps with just the right weight so that the ball doesn't get to the fielder too fast.

Finesse players are adept at taking pace off the ball, letting bowler do the work.

Yes, a good late cut is a mark of a finesse player, but so is a one to deep mid on or a two to the sweeper on the cover boundary.

Glenn Turner or Jeremy Coney were finesse players.

I have never seen BM take pace off the ball to get the run :).

Do we have any finesse players left these days?

Really good question. Not going to see the answer in 20/20 of course.

Ross Taylor is a good candidate. When not asked to slog he really is a nice batsman to watch, all about timing and placement rather than power (of which he has plenty).

    Daniel Flynn looks promising.

As weird as this sounds I think Oram is a much better finesse player than a slogger.

I haven't seen Justin Marshall lately but he used to be mostly about placement.

Part of the problem with finesse is that all to often you are viewed as not appropriate for ODIs (or 20/20s) and if you don't get selected for those then you don't make any money as a cricketer :(.

    Heya Legbreak

I could have gone back further, but got bored. Also the further you go back the more different a player is from what walks out there tomorrow.

I deliberately excluded non international matches because from what I've seen the biggest difference is that bowling is never as good in first class as it is in internationals.

I'm well aware that the stats can be manipulated, I was trying not to do that. I was actually quite surprised how variable his scoring has been.

As for 20/20s being a guide for ODIs mmmm nah. Don't get me wrong I like 20/20. It's a good game, but in 20 overs you really have to be crap to lose 6 wickets and get into your lesser batsmen. So it really doesn't matter if batsmen take risks, if a batsman lasts 4 overs they've done their bit. In 50 overs that just isn't true.

Oh and as for 20/20s McCullum is fine as an opener. never questioned that, or if I did I should get slapped.

But I still don't see 20/20 as a predictor of performance in ODIs or tests.
