  • Capture: Labour Weekend: Town or Country?,

Did your child make the long traverse to the Hastings Olympics the year before?

No - he wasn't a Steiner boy all his life, transferred there at intermediate school after a bad experience at the school we started him at.

I keep coming back to this picture: it evokes many good times and places: Wellington valley houses, London flats, old New Zealand villas, and Ravensbourne/Maia a couple of years ago when my boys went to school at Maia in a yurt for three weeks while we evaded earthquakes.

That was my eldest's class. Must have been a pretty cool school to come to for a medium term visit.

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #1: The Party…,

Emminently workable. Do the calculation once with all parties in it. All parties with at least 4 MPs in the result go back for a second go ’round, keeping the MPs that gives them. I have considered suggesting it myself, it just seems unlikely.

I'd suggest a system like STV where all the votes get counted, and then you start lopping parties off at the bottom, redoing the calculation until all parties are above the threshold for X MPs. Instead of the votes being lopped off being redistributed, the total number of votes included in the counted votes would just fall.

Otherwise you might have a party that was 1000 votes off the required number missing out, but once you got rid of all the minor parties they'd actually have made it. I guess you could get the same now with parties that have almost 5%, and if it was recalculated without all the smaller parties they would have made it.

I can't see it ever happening through. Would be somewhat weird to have the number of votes required to reach parliament adjusted not only by the number of voters, but where exactly they cast those votes.

  • Hard News: Music: It's Choice,

Does anyone else find that the embedded the audience player stops shortly into songs and pops up a wee error message saying to try again later? Been doing it for me consistently for a few weeks.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers,

I’ve seen machines where the state gets cleared down after every user. That would seem more sensible.

I understand this is what apple does with its guest account - gets wiped at logout. Ideal for a kiosk type situation.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers,

Did I understand correctly? Did anyone discuss these issues?

Keith's laptop was a more secure place to have this information than the kiosks. The only thing that was as insecure was probably his memory stick. And he probably tried not to leave that lying around in public areas, unlike the MSD.

That’s where Keith may have done us all a huge favour – more likely now that Cabinet will approve extra money before all the other cross-agency systems are in place, especially Health ones.

Heh heh. He said "extra money".

  • OnPoint: The Source,

    Privacy act?

I found the privacy act next to useless many years ago when I made a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner about a clear breach of my privacy by the police.

Not only did I have to show that they breached my privacy, but also I had to show how this had detrimentally affected me. If there were no negative consequences of them breaching my privacy, the Privacy Commissioner closed down the complaint.

Given that sponsorship is a normal part of business, it would seem strange if the various recipients of bailouts stopped doing it. It's just a form of advertising after all.
