  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak, in reply to Dinah Dunavan,

I feel the whole Red Peak saga has been an exercise in mass manipulation.

    Who by? Toby Manhire Inc?

In a world where corporate mass manipulation is coming out of our ears, this was anything but.

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak, in reply to sandra,

I think I’ll start a social media campaign for the flag I like and get another one added to the referendum.

That's been a recurring theme in online debates over the past few weeks. I've lost count of the number of people who have said "Anybody could get 50,000 signatures, it's easy to rig online petitions", etc.

But here's the thing - they didn't. And with respect Sandra, you haven't (and presumably won't). Nothing wrong with that - you probably have a life! Fair enough.

But still ... people got engaged in the debate. They acted. They moved from "coulda" to "will" to "did". It took a lot of effort and it got a result. That won't change the world, but it did achieve something concrete, and that's a good thing.

Anyone else who wants to do the same should be encouraged to do so. Unfortunately, very few people do, which is a shame.

Welcome back Hadyn. It's not a Rugby World Cup without this blog.

As for the politics issue - most sports "heroes" turn out to be unsound, I'm afraid. Mix money and a conservative mindset, it's no surprise. It's just that these days we know more about it (coz social media is to blame for everything!!11!!).

We could put together an alternative squad of reported Not-Nats if you like ... Jerome Kaino, Anton Oliver, Stacey Jones - see, I'm struggling here.

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

I’ll vote for Red Peak in the first referendum – or more accurately, I intend to vote for it, before leaving the envelope at the bottom of a pile and only remembering where I left it the day after the poll closes. Or accidentally throwing it out with the junk mail.

Anyway, congrats to the Greens. They did a smart thing, and got the win.

ETA: According to Stuff reports, Labour are supporting the Greens and voting for Red Peak to be included. As I pointed out last week (because it was predictable), they have ended up following, not leading or opposing. Good that they are being smart now, better if they had been smarter earlier.

  • Polity: So who exactly placed conditions…, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Hmm. People not bothering to read previous comments and links is one of the more irritating features of internet discussions ...

  • Hard News: NZME and you,

An illustration (sic) of what happens when your newsroom is emptied out:

Herald runs an online story about the flag, and the NZ First claim that it looks like a Nazi design.

A quick search of Getty images and they come up with the requisite photo ... of the Federal Republic of Germany. Oh dear. Ambassadors have been recalled for less ...

So "Red Peak" will be added to the ballot, if parliamentary manoeuvres this afternoon pan out as expected. Credit to the Greens.

Good outcome, regardless of the avoidably messy way it got there.

(I don't think it will win the first referendum, but still, that's now a decision for the people, not a panel).

  • Hard News: On youthful indiscretions,

As I pointed out earlier, Ashcroft has many roles, and one effect (coincidental or not) is to make the media wary of taking him on. He does good things, ergo he is good, ergo his critics - or even journalists doing their job - are not:

Well, do you support criminals and hate victims? Do you?
