  • Cracker: No Kitty Blues,

My moggy had to make the last trip to the vet a couple of weeks ago. It was a tough call, but when you accept that ball of fluff into your house and heart, you also have to promise that some day you will make that really difficult decision.
My daughter sent me a few lines she dug up from somewhere that made my eyes leak.

They will not go quietly, those who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survive.
Old habits still make us think we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night, we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts belongs to them....
    and always will. - Anon

  • Busytown: To infinity and beyond,

Quoting Kyle: "It's basically an airborne lawnmower
My lawns often get that long as well. I didn't know someone else had come up with an invention to chop them by hovering above them."

The Flymo does a pretty good job. ;^)

  • Hard News: Policy, finally,

If we are to meet the 80% reduction in carbon emissions needed to hopefully stall catastrophic climate change, we're going to need to get serious about better solutions than the Prius. Has anyone calculated its cradle-to-grave carbon footprint? Or any of the other electic hotrods that are missing the point so spectacularly?

They may be rubbished by Jeremy Clarkson, but the G-Whiz <http://www.goingreen.co.uk/> has more chance of keeping us mobile without taking out the biosphere. Personally I suspect we'll have to think in terms of the Aerorider <http://www.aerorider.com/> if we really want to keep emissions down.

Actually, we're going to have think a lot harder about the whole deal with transport, to reduce all unnecessary trips, even if it means radically rebuilt cities.... which are likely if the sea-level rises envisaged prove correct.

    Note: it's BY 80% not to 80%!!

  • Hard News: Walk the Line,

I thought the Poms were working on a Driver Impairment Test run on a PDA that makes more sense than the nonsense currently proposed. It involved tapping a dot that kept reappearing at different positions on the screen. The program logged your error rate and blew the whistle if your perception, reaction times or accuracy were impaired, whether it was from alcohol, wacky baccy, various other uppers and/or downers or even just fatigue. All of which should keep you off the road.

It would be interesting if these proposed tests were ever challenged in court, by asking the Judge to attempt them. "Drunk in charge of a court, my lud".

Come to think of it, ask the cop on the side of the road to demo first.

  • Southerly: The End of Lake Ellesmere?,

The "let the lake bed be converted to dairying" reminds me of the (reputedly) Ameri-Indian saying:

When the last tree has been cut down,
when the last river is poisoned,
when the last fish is killed,
they'll discover you can't eat money.

  • Hard News: Ihug: still screwed?,

Rich Bentley was billed twice, I received my bill 3 days after it was due to be paid.
The trouble with losing mail is you may never know. I know I have because when I suspected something was wrong on the Saturday, I sent an email to all 4 working accounts at iHug, plus Gmail & my work acc at Paradise. Only one of the iHug mails returned. The Gmail made it that far but went AWOL when forwarded.
Even the process of registering to post to this forum has been a bit fraught. I used my Gmail address, but after 10 mins or so still haven't received the forwarded email at iHug. I had to log into Gmail directly to pick it up.....
....something I might start doing more regularly. It's a good thought to make more use of Gmail. Effectively your own Domain
