  • Cracker: Go Figure,

I have wondered for many years what the worth is of a single viewer per hour.

Presumably it is easy enough to calculate, The sum of the cost to run the ads in that hour divided by the number of viewers. I have access to neither of those figures though.

I remember those nasty ads several years back that tried to justify ads. Implying that if we didn't have advertising then we'd all be paying something like $10 an hour.

Of course the truth is that people do pay for free to air television in increased prices of products and services that have a portion of their revenue go into advertising budgets. It's just doing things this way we get to pay for our television and be annoyed by ads.

  • Hard News: Not in front of the children,

head to your nearest printers, print and distribute names of name suppressed entertainer.

There are no words banned there, Information is suppressed. Banning isn't really an idea that can be applied to information, it's just there.

The words themselves are not intrinsically related to the restriction. The aspect that is controlled is whether or not they convey the suppressed information.

If there is a schoolboy who has the same name as the suppressed entertainer comes home with a school report saying "[redacted] has been a very naughty boy", there is no problem. The exact same sentence from a commenter during a news report on the entertainer would be breaking the law.

Words and information conveyed by them are different things.

we might give you a picture of a spider, then a VR spider

Minor point, but people tend to underestimate the creepiness of VR spiders.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

Our neighbour's son (18 year old Maori, who lives with him mum not his Dad, our neighbour) recently spent 6 months in jail on a drugs charge (possession) which was dropped. You can bet if his daddy was a rich white man he wouldn't have waited a trial date, and eventual dropping of all charges, in prison. So what are the chances of the boy becoming a mongrel mob member now, do you think.

And yet I really don't think the problem is with how the privileged white kids are being treated. Equality doesn't require injustice for all.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

Has policy changed in recent years? Because I remembered this

    http://norightturn.blogspot.com/2006/10/inducing-compliance-is-assault.html

when I saw the news item

"Spray was needed "to get compliance" in areas where bottles were being thrown from, he said. "

And in that piece and in the close-up piece the police rejected any notion that they had been heavy handed. Yet the news piece shows a guy being pepper sprayed I'm pretty sure to just wipe the smug look off his face.

It's one thing for students behave like drunken thugs and regret it in the morning, but the police should be held to higher standards and yet when given the chance to reflect upon their behaviour remain unrepentant.

  • Up Front: Disunited,

Paul Graham has already done the hard yards on why I won't be attending a high school reunion anytime soon.

I could say the same thing but for totally different reasons I suspect.

I wasn't a fan of childhood, or small towns. There are a few who I would like to meet for a coffee one day to see how their life went however.

There was one who I'd like to meet again simply because I always felt comfortable with, while not actually being especially close. Possibly one of the people I've known for the longest. There are photos of us back far enough that the Westermark effect may have been a factor.

I lost track shortly after leaving school. I think the last I heard was that she was in the halls of residence sharing a room with a complete bitch.

And thank you to all who wished me luck with my various medical tests. It worked. CT says no tumour for me. Ultrasound says no (well they didn't actually say what that was looking for, but they didn't find it).

The Doctor actually said "You've had every test known to man". He also said normally at this point they'd give me prednisone, but given that I'm currently taking prednisone He's told me to take more.

On the whole I think I'd rather not have my HLA-B27.

The repeated applause is a bit grating.

I'm thinking, Why couldn't they just take a drink each time?
