David... the treehouse does sound mighty tempting... I've always been a sucker for a decent treehouse! (probably 'cos I never had one as a kid)
will do my best to call in, even if it's just for a quick drink & a climb up the tree. It will be a nice change from unpacking - we move on Friday :)

oops been afk a few days due to being forced from my home after a structural engineer deemed it too dodgy to live in.
Still waiting for a visit from EQC... the house is still standing, although if they wait too much longer before visiting, it may not be.I'm already planning to get drunk on Saturday night - a combination of "we survived a shite week" and "it's my birthday". Both extremely good reasons and I plan to behave badly.
with any luck we'll be all moved into a rental property by the end of this week and I won't have to rely on dodgy motel wireless internet.
hope all fellow Cantabs (& their houses) are holding up ok :)

I'd write more but the alcohol has done its thing and now I'm stumbling off to bed (and it's not 'cos the earth is moving... for once!)

Whatever you have to calm your nerves, I suggest you take more.
I'm drinking tonight. I don't do that terribly often but I think it's both needed and deserved at the moment.
We're all in this horrible, shaky limbo and just when you think things are returning to normal (I had meetings at polytech planned for today, we were reopening 2moro), the ground burps again and everything alters once more. And the experts are still warning us to expect an aftershock of around 6.1 or so, 'cos that's what past experience bears out.
We're all so terribly over it. If it's been surreal for the rest of NZ, it's certainly been super-crazy-weird for us down here in shakeytown.
I'm starting to understand the whole post-traumatic-shock thing a lot more clearly now... but the truly awful thing is we're not at the post-anything stage cos it's still. bloody. happening.
around 300 aftershocks and counting.
I'll 2nd (3rd/4th) other locals' thanks for all the supportive messages - they help warm the heart.

aaaand we continue to rumble down here in Chch
another good shake just then. Oh well, we now have tarpaulins in place to cover what remains of the brick wall and will just have to wait and see whether the wind or the aftershocks make it come tumbling down
interesting times....
but yeah... no school for the kids, no uni/polytech for me... I just wish the earth would stop rocking so I can get some writing done

our suburb (Somerfield) escaped the road-rupturing damage seen elsewhere but our house suffered a bit... the double-brick wall has partially collapsed and separated slightly from the wooden part of the house, and there's a whole lot of new cracks... the floor leans in a slightly different way too.
On the upside, the bathroom door now shuts better! Old villas, eh?!life has been better since the power came back on but I must admit I'm getting a bit weary of the quite frequent aftershocks. At least they only last for a fraction of the time we spent rockn&rollin this morning...

Also, I spelt Kristine's name wrong. I'd go in and fix it, but the plane I'm sitting in is about to take off.
Anyway, it was the usual worthwhile experience: good course, bright, engaged kids.
Ruth was away otherwise she would've been there with bells on, I'm sure :)
and it's just Kris, not Kristine... but you let me play with your iPad so I don't mind...
