  • Hard News: Speaking Freely,

I run Freeview off an $80 PCI tuner card, and it seems to work pretty well. I have a few gripes about the codecs used though, as H.264 is non-free and you need to spend about $100 to buy software to obtain the codec to use. I would be surprised if including this codec is not a major factor in the cost of set top boxes.

The fact that TV3 uses 1080i makes it use much more CPU/GPU than should be necessary, I doubt there are many HD CRT tvs around.

  • Hard News: God's squads,

Can someone clarify The Law on this? I thought we weren't obliged to give our name unless we were arrested? I would have declined politely and walked away. Would I have then been arrested?

My understanding is you are required to give your name, address and occupation and nothing else, including no need to show ID to prove it. The community law center has a sheet here - http://www.communitylaw.org.nz/fileadmin/documents/police_powers_to_stop_and_search.pdf
Of course, if you ask an officer their number they are obliged to give it to you as well.

And the version I heard (though don't agree with) is: A Conservative is a Liberal who has been mugged.

  • Hard News: Everybody's vogueing on the…,

I mean, as people watch less and less adverts, because they no longer have to watch TV live, companies will have to find other ways to get their products in front of the consumer.

Yeah, I can't wait for the Year of the Whopper, though Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment does have that special ring to it.

  • Hard News: Proud Wednesday,

It really would be nice to be able to download the movies without an external application..

That said, I just watched patu! and it was amazing. Really puts Keys claimed lack of opinion into perspective for someone from the younger generation.

    Thanks for the heads up.
