Oh sorry, Ben W, to clarify
-
Ben I agree that there is more trolling than ever, but I think that there is less acceptance of it by bloggers, perhaps? More questioning of whether free speech has to equal no moderation, at least.

I think PA System is a living example of how the conduct of the authors sends a clear message to commenters of what their conduct should be, and thus maintains a largely cordial environment.
I sense that over the last six months or so, and more since PAS started, there has been some questioning amongst the broader pol bloggers about the value of comments sections that just rapidly descend into madness. Maybe the scene is maturing? I don't really know.
I've always allowed anonymous comments and I've only ever deleted one (other than spam or doubles of course). I find that occasionally I get a comment (actually more frequently pseudonymous than anon) that's objectionable and I just give them a comment smack back and it doesn't go any further. At this stage I think that's more productive than deletion as it happens rarely and this way I remind everyone what's ok and what's not on my blog, as opposed to only one or two people noticing and having to deal with the stupid cries of "censorship" that result from deleting a comment.
Readers here may be interested in a discussion had back in Feb about the nature of argument and commenting on the pol blogs, and how some seem to see the comment threads as their own Colosseum for senseless gladiatorial battle.

That is a creepy story EH, no doubt about it. How young are they trying to convert people to the ol' "youth group" ruse these days anyway? 9 seems a little, well, precocious. I didn't get into a "youth group" until 13, and within 12 months most of my friends were using it as a ruse to meet their boyfriends and go drinking on a Friday night. Kids these days.

Soccer ball signed by Rod Stewart? That's a bit random - what's the story behind that gem?
Also is there a reason for the asterisks on the flying Nun stuff?
Best wishes for tonight - I hope it goes swimmingly :-)

I thought the timing of the launch of Hothouse was unfortunate. The first scene I saw was a police man pulling a woman into an alley and feeling her up. Bit too close to the bone for me on the day Rickards, Shipton and Schollum were found not guilty.

This is a great thread - I have learnt so much! Good luck with the Hustle, I can't come but will contact Conor about making a contribution too. It's for a truly good cause. Best wishes to you and your family RB.

I was at the Auckland march too Riddley, interesting to read your perceptions as you saw some different things from me. That'll serve me right for being late.
Thanks too for reporting on the news coverage, which I missed. Not surprising that the media has focused on a small amount of conflict and not the bigger issues, but still disappointing.
For those who have commented that they hope this is a turning point for the culture of the police, I fervently share your wish. You can call me naive if you want, but this really must change, and I just find it far too depressing to consider that it might not.

I second Riddley above, thanks for that Stephen Judd, much appreciated!

That Sky TV news drives me nuts, on the rare occasions I am in a hotel and thus get to see it. It's supposedly NZ news but there's little local in it, just lots and lots of Oz.
I'd be quite interested to know what the Islamic fundamentalist position is on evolution, or for that matter the Jewish fundamentalist position. I suspect it's not that different from Christian creationists? It's not something I've really thought about much, as the Christian creationists are much more in my face.
